बाद में उन्होंने Delhi, London School of Economics, Oxford और Harvard में पढ़ाया, जहाँ वे Thomas W. Lamont University Professor हैं।
Same income वाले दो people equally well-off नहीं होते, अगर उनमें से एक disabled है, pregnant है या ऐसे स्थान पर रहता है जहाँ clean water तक पहुँचने में पूरा दिन लग जाता है।
1998 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences “for his contributions to welfare economics” के लिए जीता।
Poverty and Famines: food
Poverty and Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation
उस year Bengal का food output famine न होने वाले years से dramatically कम नहीं था।
Capability approach: development as freedom
Functionings वे चीज़ें हैं जिन्हें person वास्तव में do या be कर पाता है: well-nourished होना, literate होना, community life में हिस्सा लेना और safely move कर पाना। Rich person fasting करे और poor person starve करे, दोनों hungry हैं, इसलिए functioning same है।
उन्होंने इसी method को justice तक The Idea of Justice (2009) में बढ़ाया।
इसलिए Sen agreed हुए और first Human Development Report ने 1990 में HDI launch किया।
|---|---|---|
| A long and healthy life | Health और survival | Life expectancy at birth |
| Knowledge | Education और literacy | Mean और expected years of schooling |
| A decent standard of living | Resources पर command | Gross national income per capita (PPP) |
उनकी books Hunger and Public Action (1989) और An Uncertain Glory: India and Its Contradictions (2013) दिखाती हैं कि कई states से poorer Kerala literacy, life expectancy और child health में बेहतर करता है, क्योंकि उसने public services पर खर्च किया।
The Argumentative Indian (2005) में उनका तर्क है कि India की real tradition quiet spirituality नहीं, बल्कि public debate और heterodoxy की लंबी noisy history है। वे revived Nalanda University के first chancellor भी रहे।
Ethics में justice, distributive fairness और public reasoning के लिए वे best real-world hook हैं।
Summaries के ज़रिए ideas पढ़िए और एक accessible primary text खोलिए: Development as Freedom। Poverty and Famines, Collective Choice and Social Welfare और The Idea of Justice को recognise और correctly attribute करने वाले titles की तरह रखें, ऐसी books की तरह नहीं जिन्हें पूरा grind करना है।
1998 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences “for his contributions to welfare economics” जीता। Prize ने social choice theory, poverty और inequality measurement तथा famine की entitlement analysis पर उनके work को recognise किया।
Capability approach
Sen की entitlement theory of famine क्या है?
उन्होंने Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq के साथ 1990 में UNDP की first Human Development Report के लिए HDI co-create किया।
Development as Freedom (1999) सबसे accessible single text है।
