To check your PAN card status, use the tracker of the agency that took your application: the 15-digit acknowledgement number on Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov), the application or coupon number on UTIITSL or your Aadhaar number with an OTP for an Instant e-PAN issued on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. All three are free. Most people come here for one of three reasons: the card hasn’t arrived, the e-PAN email hasn’t come or they want to know if the application went through at all.
The common mistake is checking the wrong tracker. A Protean acknowledgement number returns nothing on UTIITSL, and an Instant e-PAN never shows up on either, because the e-filing portal issues it directly. The second confusion is newer. Since 1 April 2026, PAN applications go on new forms under the Income-tax Act, 2025, and many readers assume the tracking flow changed too. It hasn’t: the same three trackers still work, and this guide shows each one.
PAN card status at a glance
The table below sums up where to check and whom to call. Fees are for applying, not for tracking; checking status costs nothing.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Who issues PAN | Income Tax Department, under the Central Board of Direct Taxes |
| Application agencies | Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL e-Gov) and UTIITSL |
| Protean tracker | Track your PAN/TAN Application Status, with the 15-digit acknowledgement number |
| UTIITSL tracker | Track PAN Card, with the application or coupon number (or PAN) and date of birth |
| Instant e-PAN tracker | e-filing portal, Quick Links > Instant e-PAN > Check Status / Download e-PAN |
| Card delivery time | About 15 working days after a complete and correct application (Protean FAQ) |
| Application fee | Rs 107 with a physical card in India, Rs 1,017 abroad; Rs 72 for e-PAN only on UTIITSL |
| Helplines | Protean 020-27218080; UTIITSL 033-40802999; e-filing 1800 103 0025 |
Which tracker to use for your PAN application
Your PAN card status lives only with the agency that received the application. The number on your acknowledgement slip or confirmation email tells you which one that was.
| Where you applied | The number you hold | Where to track |
|---|---|---|
| Protean website or a Protean PAN centre | 15-digit acknowledgement number | Protean status tracker |
| UTIITSL website or a UTIITSL PAN centre | Application or coupon number | UTIITSL Track PAN Card |
| Income Tax e-filing portal (Instant e-PAN) | Acknowledgement number, but status is checked with Aadhaar | e-filing portal, Instant e-PAN |
| Change or correction request | Acknowledgement or coupon number of that request | Same tracker as the agency that took it |
If you can’t find the slip, search your email for the confirmation the agency sent at payment. A correction request is tracked exactly like a new application, so the steps below apply to both. For the correction process itself, see the PAN card correction guide.
How to check PAN card status on Protean (NSDL)
Protean still runs the tracker many people search for as “NSDL PAN card status”. The tracking page is titled Track your PAN/TAN Application Status and sits on Protean’s TIN website (tin.tin.proteantech.in). Protean’s own FAQ calls the entry point “Track PAN Status”.
- Open Protean’s PAN services site and choose the option to track PAN status, or go straight to the status-track page on tin.tin.proteantech.in.
- Under Application Type, select PAN – New / Change Request.
- Enter the 15-digit acknowledgement number in the box after the “N-” prefix.
- Complete the captcha check and click SUBMIT.
- Read the status line. It tells you the stage your application has reached.
Protean also offers an SMS route: send PTNPAN, a space and your 15-digit acknowledgement number to 57575. The name-and-date-of-birth search option on the tracker is switched off, so the acknowledgement number is the only key. If you lost it, the confirmation email Protean sent at payment carries it.
How to check PAN application status on UTIITSL
UTIITSL’s tracker is reached from its PAN portal (pan.utiitsl.com) through the Track PAN Card box and the Click to Track Status link. It accepts more than one key, which helps if you’ve misplaced the slip.
- Open UTIITSL’s PAN portal and click Click to Track Status under Track PAN Card.
- Enter the Application /Coupon Number, or your 10-character PAN Number if the PAN is already allotted.
- Enter your date of birth (or the date of incorporation, agreement or deed for a firm, trust or company).
- Type the captcha and click Search.
UTIITSL’s customer care desk is on 033-40802999, from 9 am to 8 pm on all days, and by email at utiitsl.gsd[at]utiitsl[dot]com.
How to check Instant e-PAN status on the e-filing portal
An Instant e-PAN is issued free on the Income Tax e-filing portal from your Aadhaar data, and its status is checked there, not on Protean or UTIITSL. The department’s Instant e-PAN help page lists these steps.
- On the e-filing portal home page, click Instant e-PAN under Quick Links.
- On the Check Status / Download e-PAN tile, click Continue.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and click Continue.
- Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile and click Validate Aadhaar OTP and Continue.
- If the PAN is allotted, choose View e-PAN, Download e-PAN or Create e-Filing Account.
After you register on the portal, the same file is under Services > View / Download e-PAN once you log in. Two eligibility points explain most failed Instant e-PAN requests:
- The service is only for individuals who don’t already hold a PAN, aren’t minors and aren’t representative assessees.
- It now uses DigiLocker to fetch a date-of-birth document, such as a driving licence, birth certificate, Class X marksheet or CGHS card. If none of these sits in your DigiLocker, the department tells you to use the regular application instead.
A short explainer on how DigiLocker works helps if you haven’t used it. If your mobile number isn’t linked to Aadhaar, both the OTP and DigiLocker sign-up fail; the fix is at an Aadhaar centre, covered in the Aadhaar update guide.
What the new PAN forms and PAN 2.0 change for tracking
Nothing changes for tracking yet; what changed is the form you apply on. The Income-tax Act, 2025 came into force on 1 April 2026, and Rule 158 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026 now prescribes four application forms:
- Form No. 93 for an individual who is a citizen of India;
- Form No. 94 for a company or entity formed in India;
- Form No. 95 for an individual who isn’t an Indian citizen;
- Form No. 96 for an entity formed outside India.
UTIITSL’s notice says old Form 49A, Form 49AA and the old change-request form are not accepted after 31 March 2026. Protean lists PAN CR-01 as the individual’s change-request form. Applications made on the old forms before that date are tracked the same way as before. The broader shift in the law is explained in the note on the new Income-tax Act, 2025.
PAN 2.0 is the bigger change still to come. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved it on 25 November 2024 at a cost of Rs 1,435 crore, to consolidate PAN and TAN services and PAN validation into one system. As of 3 November 2026, the e-filing portal’s 2026 news list carries no notice that the unified portal has gone live, and the department’s own help pages still send PAN applicants to Protean and UTIITSL. Until an official notice says otherwise, track on the agency that took your application.
How long a PAN takes and why applications stall
Protean’s FAQ puts delivery at about 15 working days after a complete and correct application. The clock starts only when the application is complete, which is why the status sometimes sits still. These are the usual reasons, from Protean’s own instructions:
- Documents not received. If you applied online but chose to send papers, the signed acknowledgement and proofs must reach Protean within 15 days of the online application. A demand-draft payment is processed only after the proofs arrive and the payment is realised.
- Name mismatch. The name in the form must match the name on the proof of identity and proof of address exactly. A missing initial or a different spelling holds the application.
- Wrong DigiLocker document. The date-of-birth document you pick on the application page must be the one DigiLocker holds; otherwise the fetch fails and you must restart.
- Contact details. All post goes to the “address for communication” in the form, and Protean asks applicants to give a mobile number so a discrepancy can be resolved quickly.
The physical card is printed after the department allots the PAN and is posted to the communication address along with an allotment letter. If you gave an email address, the department’s allotment is also communicated by email, and the e-PAN in PDF form is sent to that address.
Common tracking errors and their fixes
Most “no record found” results are input errors, not lost applications. Each has a simple fix.
| Error | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No record on Protean | The application went to UTIITSL, or it’s an Instant e-PAN | Try the UTIITSL tracker, or the e-filing portal with Aadhaar |
| No record on UTIITSL | A Protean acknowledgement number was entered | Use Protean’s tracker with the 15-digit number |
| Invalid acknowledgement number | Extra digits, or the “N” prefix typed into the box | Enter only the 15 digits after “N-“ |
| Status hasn’t moved for weeks | Documents not received, or a name mismatch | Call the agency’s helpline with the acknowledgement number |
| Instant e-PAN OTP not received | Mobile not linked to Aadhaar | Link the mobile at an Aadhaar centre, then retry |
| DigiLocker step fails | Date-of-birth document not in DigiLocker | Pull the document from its issuer, or apply on Form No. 93 |
After the status says allotted: download, reprint and verify
Once the PAN is allotted, three follow-ups are worth doing. First, keep the e-PAN: it’s a valid electronic PAN, and UTIITSL lets you download it for dispatched or e-PAN-issued cases. Second, if you took an Instant e-PAN and want a plastic card, UTIITSL accepts a print order through its Reprint PAN Card option. Third, run Verify Your PAN on the e-filing portal. It confirms that your name and date of birth match the department’s database and shows whether the PAN is active. You can verify up to five PANs a day with one mobile number.
Active and allotted aren’t the same thing. A PAN that isn’t linked with Aadhaar can be allotted and still be inoperative. That problem, the Rs 1,000 fee and the fix are covered in the separate Aadhaar PAN link guide on this site. If you haven’t applied yet, start with the guide to applying for a PAN card online.
Where to complain and get help
Start with the agency that holds your application, and keep the acknowledgement or coupon number ready.
- Protean: PAN/TDS call centre 020-27218080, email tininf[at]proteantech[dot]in or write to the Income Tax PAN Services Unit, 4th Floor, Sapphire Chambers, Baner Road, Baner, Pune 411045.
- UTIITSL: 033-40802999, 9 am to 8 pm on all days, email utiitsl.gsd[at]utiitsl[dot]com.
- e-filing portal (Instant e-PAN): 1800 103 0025 or 1800 419 0025, 8 am to 8 pm, Monday to Friday, and the Grievances link in the portal footer.
If the agency doesn’t resolve it, the grievance goes to the Income Tax Department, which works under the Central Board of Direct Taxes. Give the acknowledgement number and the date of application in every complaint; without them nobody can find the file.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check my PAN card status?
Use the tracker of the agency that took your application. For Protean (NSDL), enter the 15-digit acknowledgement number on its status-track page; for UTIITSL, enter the application or coupon number with your date of birth; for an Instant e-PAN, use the e-filing portal with your Aadhaar and OTP. Checking status is free on all three.
How do I check PAN card status by NSDL?
NSDL e-Gov is now called Protean eGov Technologies, and its tracker is the Track your PAN/TAN Application Status page on its TIN website. Select PAN – New / Change Request, enter the 15-digit acknowledgement number, complete the captcha and submit. You can also SMS PTNPAN followed by the acknowledgement number to 57575.
Can I check PAN card status without the acknowledgement number?
On UTIITSL, yes, if the PAN is already allotted: the tracker accepts your PAN with your date of birth. Protean’s tracker needs the acknowledgement number, and its name-based search is switched off. If you lost the number, look for the confirmation email sent when you paid.
How do I check Instant e-PAN status?
Go to the e-filing portal, click Instant e-PAN under Quick Links, then Continue on the Check Status / Download e-PAN tile. Enter your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. If the PAN is allotted, you can view or download the e-PAN right there.
How many days does it take to get a PAN card?
Protean’s FAQ says about 15 working days after a complete and correct application. Delays usually come from documents that didn’t reach the agency within 15 days of an online application, or a name that doesn’t match the proof documents. If you gave an email address, the e-PAN is sent there as a PDF.
Did the new Income-tax Act change how PAN status is tracked?
No. The Income-tax Act, 2025 took effect on 1 April 2026 and brought new application forms, Form No. 93 to 96, but the Protean, UTIITSL and e-filing trackers work as before. PAN 2.0, approved in November 2024, aims to bring all PAN services onto one portal, and the department hadn’t announced its launch as of 3 November 2026.
What is the PAN card helpline number?
Protean’s PAN/TDS call centre is 020-27218080, and UTIITSL’s customer care is 033-40802999 from 9 am to 8 pm on all days. For Instant e-PAN issues, call the e-filing helpdesk on 1800 103 0025 or 1800 419 0025 on weekdays. Keep your acknowledgement number ready.
My PAN status shows allotted, but is my PAN active?
Not necessarily. Run Verify Your PAN on the e-filing portal, which confirms your details and whether the PAN is active. A PAN that isn’t linked with Aadhaar can become inoperative even after allotment, and fixing that needs the Rs 1,000 fee and the Link Aadhaar service.
