SBI PO Salary: JMGS-I Basic Pay, Bank DA, CTC and Promotion Ladder

SBI PO salary explained: JMGS-I basic pay of Rs 56,480 at joining, quarterly bank DA, the Rs 21.97 lakh CTC, the bond and the MMGS-II ladder.

Illustration for the SBI PO salary guide on Anantam IAS

SBI PO salary starts at a basic pay of ₹48,480 plus four advance increments in Junior Management Grade Scale-I (JMGS-I), which puts a new Probationary Officer at ₹56,480 basic on the day of joining. State Bank of India prints this in its latest PO notification, Advertisement No. CRPD/PO/2026-27/09 dated 18 June 2026, along with an approximate cost to company of ₹21.97 lakh a year at Mumbai. Basic pay plus bank DA, less the pension deduction, comes to roughly ₹65,000 a month as an estimate, before housing, city allowances and income tax, which is why take-home pay differs from one posting to the next.

The common mistake is to read that ₹21.97 lakh as a salary. It’s a cost-to-company figure: it counts leased housing, the bank’s pension contribution and perks that never reach a savings account each month. The second mistake is to assume bank DA works like central government DA. It doesn’t. This note separates the printed pay scale, the bank DA formula, the CTC and the in-hand estimate, and says where each figure comes from.

SBI PO Salary at a Glance

Every row below comes from an SBI recruitment document or an Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) circular. Where a figure is our own arithmetic, it’s labelled as an estimate.

Where the ₹48,480 Figure Comes From

The figure comes from the “Emoluments” clause of the SBI notification, not from any pay commission. SBI’s 2026 advertisement for 1,500 Probationary Officers states that the starting basic pay is ₹48,480 plus 4 advance increments in the JMGS-I scale. The notification and its corrigendum are on SBI’s careers site, sbi.bank.in, under Current Openings.

The scale reads like a code, so here it is decoded:

  • ₹48,480 is the first stage of the scale;
  • “2,000/7” means seven annual increments of ₹2,000 each, reaching ₹62,480;
  • “2,340/2” means two increments of ₹2,340, reaching ₹67,160;
  • “2,680/7” means seven increments of ₹2,680, ending at ₹85,920, the top of JMGS-I.

Four advance increments at ₹2,000 each add ₹8,000, so a PO starts at ₹56,480 rather than at the bottom stage. That head start is the single biggest reason the salary of SBI PO is higher than that of an officer who joins the same scale without advance increments.

This is also where the confusion with government pay begins. A central government officer sits in a level of the 7th Pay Commission matrix. A bank officer sits in a scale settled between banks and officers’ unions through the IBA, so the 8th Pay Commission doesn’t apply to SBI officers at all. Bank pay changes through the next bipartite settlement, not through a pay commission report.

How Bank DA Works

Bank DA is a percentage of “pay” that the IBA revises every three months from the consumer price index. For a newly joined officer, “pay” is the basic pay. The current officer scales and DA formula come from the 12th Bipartite Settlement and the Joint Note, both dated 8 March 2024.

The IBA’s circular dated 3 August 2026 shows the formula at work:

  • The average All-India CPI for Industrial Workers (base 2016=100) for April, May and June 2026 was 150.86.
  • The settlement’s base is 123.03 points, so the excess is 27.83 points.
  • Each 0.01 change in the index moves DA by 0.01% of pay.
  • DA for August, September and October 2026 is therefore 27.83% of pay.

The next revision, for November 2026 to January 2027, follows the same method using the July to September 2026 index. We hadn’t located the IBA order for that quarter when this note was written, so the figures here use 27.83%.

Why is bank DA so much lower than the DA figures quoted for central employees? Because the 2024 settlement fixed new scales and counts DA only on the rise in the index above 123.03 points. A lower DA percentage on a revised basic isn’t a pay cut. Comparing the two DA numbers directly is like comparing two thermometers set to different zero points.

In-Hand Salary: A Worked Estimate

Here is one month’s pay for a new PO at joining, built only from the figures above. Treat it as an estimate, not a salary slip. It assumes the August to October 2026 DA and an employee NPS contribution of 10% of basic plus DA, with no income tax deducted yet.

ComponentAmount (estimate)
Basic pay (₹48,480 + 4 increments)₹56,480
DA at 27.83%₹15,718
Basic plus DA₹72,198
NPS employee contribution at 10%minus ₹7,220
Before housing, city allowances and taxabout ₹64,978

On top of this sit the allowances the notification names: HRA or the lease rental facility, City Compensatory Allowance, medical cover and leave fare concession. The notification doesn’t print their rates, and they depend on the posting city and whether the officer takes a leased flat. So the honest in-hand range starts at about ₹65,000 a month before tax, and rises with city and housing.

The ₹21.97 lakh CTC works out to about ₹1.83 lakh a month. The gap between that and the cash figure above is the cost of things an officer receives but doesn’t spend: housing on lease, the bank’s own pension contribution, medical cover and leave fare concession. Read the CTC as what SBI spends on a PO at Mumbai, and the table above as the floor of what lands in the account.

Bond, Probation and Joining Terms

The notification ties the salary to three conditions. Each one affects the first three years of a career more than the pay scale does:

  • Bond: a ₹2 lakh bond to serve the bank for at least three years. SBI invokes it if the officer resigns earlier.
  • Probation: two years, with continuous assessment. Those who meet SBI’s standards are confirmed in JMGS-I; those who don’t may have their services terminated.
  • Posting: selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India, and the notice mentions opportunities for posting abroad later in the career.

Before joining, selected candidates complete an online course in basic banking. The notification’s own selling line on promotions is cautious: it speaks of an “opportunity” for meritorious officers to reach the top management grade in reasonable time, not of a guaranteed timeline.

How to Become an SBI PO

The route is SBI’s own three-phase examination, separate from the IBPS PO exam that recruits for other public sector banks. The 2026 notification sets these conditions:

  • Age: 21 to 30 years as on 1 April 2026, with 5 years’ relaxation for SC/ST, 3 for OBC (non-creamy layer) and 10 to 15 for PwBD.
  • Education: graduation in any discipline by 30 September 2026; final-year students may apply provisionally.
  • Chances: six for UR and EWS candidates, nine for OBC and PwBD (UR/EWS) candidates and no limit for SC/ST. Only a Main exam appearance counts as a chance.
  • Fee: ₹750 for UR, EWS and OBC; nil for SC, ST and PwBD.

Prelims carries 100 marks. Mains has 200 objective marks and a 30-mark descriptive test. Phase III combines a psychometric test, a group exercise (20 marks) and an interview (30 marks). The final merit list weights Mains at 75 and Phase III at 25; Prelims marks don’t count. A corrigendum later removed the credit-history (CIBIL) condition from the 2026 notice.

For the 2026 cycle, SBI held Prelims on 1 and 2 August 2026 and Mains on 12 September 2026. Its notice gives 31 October 2026 for the psychometric test and 18 November 2026 onward for group exercises and interviews, with the final result tentatively due in November or December 2026.

Promotions and Pay Growth

The first promotion is to Middle Management Grade Scale-II (MMGS-II). SBI’s own recruitment notices print the scales above JMGS-I, so the ladder can be read from them:

GradePay scale (as printed by SBI)Designation in SBI notices
JMGS-I₹48,480 to ₹85,920Probationary Officer, then confirmed officer
MMGS-II₹64,820-2,340/1-67,160-2,680/10-93,960Deputy Manager
MMGS-III₹85,920-2,680/5-99,320-2,980/2-1,05,280Manager
SMGS-IV and SMGS-VNot published in the notices we checkedSenior management
TEGS-VI and aboveNot published in the notices we checkedTop executive grades

SMGS stands for Senior Management Grade Scale and TEGS for Top Executive Grade Scale. SBI names MMGS-III, SMGS-IV, SMGS-V and TEGS-VI as officer grades in its May 2026 notice on engaging retired officers. Promotion between grades follows SBI’s internal promotion policy, which isn’t part of the recruitment notice, so no fixed number of years can be promised for any step.

Within a grade, pay still rises every year through the increments in the scale. A PO who stays in JMGS-I moves from ₹56,480 toward ₹85,920 basic, and DA rises with it because DA is a percentage of pay.

SBI PO Compared With Sibling Posts

This comparison helps when choosing between bank exams, or between banking and a government job at a similar stage. The banking system note explains where SBI sits among public sector banks, and the PSB merger note explains why it’s now the largest.

PostEntry grade and basic payRecruited throughKey difference
SBI POJMGS-I, ₹48,480 + 4 advance increments (₹56,480)SBI PO examAll-India posting, ₹2 lakh bond

SBI Specialist OfficerMMGS-II or MMGS-III and abovePost-specific SBI noticesExperience required, specialist cadre
RBI Grade BRBI’s own officer scaleRBI examRegulator, not a commercial bank

The SBI CBO comparison is the useful one. Both posts enter JMGS-I, but the PO starts two increments higher and can be posted anywhere, while a CBO stays in the circle that selected them for years.

Should Salary Decide Between Bank PO and Government Service?

The structures are different even when the numbers look close. A new SBI PO’s basic plus DA of about ₹72,000 a month grows through bank settlements, annual increments and DA quarters, not through pay commissions. The IAS salary note and the 8th Pay Commission note show how the government side moves.

The honest reading for an aspirant is this: SBI PO pays well from the first month and offers a clear grade ladder, but it comes with a three-year bond, a two-year probation and transfers across India. Choose it for the work and the pace of banking, not for a CTC figure that was never meant to be take-home pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SBI PO salary per month?

A new SBI PO gets ₹56,480 basic pay, which is ₹48,480 plus four advance increments. With bank DA of 27.83% for August to October 2026, basic plus DA is about ₹72,198. After the 10% NPS contribution the estimate is about ₹65,000 before housing, city allowances and income tax.

What is the in-hand salary of SBI PO?

SBI doesn’t publish an in-hand figure; its notification gives basic pay and a CTC. Our estimate starts at about ₹65,000 a month before tax, from basic plus DA less NPS. HRA or leased housing and the city allowance add to that, so the final figure depends on the posting.

What does the ₹21.97 lakh CTC of SBI PO mean?

It’s SBI’s approximate cost to company for a PO at the initial pay at its Mumbai centre, as stated in the 2026 notification. It includes items such as leased housing, the bank’s pension contribution and perks that aren’t paid out as monthly cash. It is not the take-home salary.

Is SBI PO DA the same as central government DA?

No. Bank DA is set every quarter by the Indian Banks’ Association from the CPI for Industrial Workers, counted over a base of 123.03 points under the 2024 bipartite settlement. It was 27.83% of pay for August to October 2026. Central DA is a separate rate on 7th Pay Commission basic pay, set by the Department of Expenditure.

What is the pay scale of SBI PO?

The JMGS-I scale is ₹48,480-2,000/7-62,480-2,340/2-67,160-2,680/7-85,920. A PO joins with four advance increments, at ₹56,480. The scale tops out at ₹85,920 basic, after which pay growth comes through promotion to MMGS-II.

Does the 8th Pay Commission apply to SBI PO salary?

No. Pay commissions cover central government employees. SBI officers’ pay is revised through bipartite settlements negotiated through the Indian Banks’ Association, the latest signed on 8 March 2024.

What is the bond for SBI PO?

Selected candidates sign a bond of ₹2 lakh to serve SBI for at least three years from joining. The bank invokes the bond if the officer resigns before three years. Probation is a separate two-year period of assessment.

What is the first promotion after SBI PO?

After confirmation in JMGS-I, the next grade is Middle Management Grade Scale-II, with a scale of ₹64,820 to ₹93,960 in SBI’s own notices. MMGS-III follows, at ₹85,920 to ₹1,05,280. Timelines depend on SBI’s promotion policy and aren’t fixed in the recruitment notice.
