Loco Pilot Salary: ALP Level 2 Pay, Kilometrage Allowance and Promotions

Loco pilot salary explained: ALP Level 2 basic pay, 63% DA, kilometrage rates by grade, a labelled in-hand estimate and the climb to Loco Pilot (Mail).

Illustration for the Loco Pilot salary guide on Anantam IAS

Loco pilot salary begins at Pay Level 2 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, because every loco pilot in Indian Railways starts as an Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) on ₹19,900 basic pay. With the 63% Dearness Allowance in force from 1 July 2026, basic plus DA comes to ₹32,437. A practical in-hand estimate for a new ALP is about ₹32,000 to ₹37,000 a month from fixed pay alone, and the figure climbs with kilometrage allowance, the per-kilometer payment that makes running staff different from every desk job at the same level.

Two ideas about this job are usually wrong. The first is that the Railways recruit “loco pilots” directly. They don’t: the Railway Recruitment Boards recruit only ALPs, and Loco Pilot (Goods, Passenger and Mail) are promotion grades. The second is that the pay level tells the whole story. For running staff it doesn’t, because kilometrage can add a five-figure sum in a heavy month. This note separates the fixed pay from the running allowance and gives the source for each figure.

Loco Pilot Salary at a Glance

The table uses the ALP entry post as the benchmark, since that is the only grade the RRBs advertise. Promotion grades follow later in the note.

Where the Level 2 Figure Comes From

The figure is printed in the recruitment notice. RRB’s Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) No. 01/2026 for Assistant Loco Pilot lists the post at Level 2 of the 7th CPC matrix with an initial pay of ₹19,900, medical standard A-1 and 11,127 vacancies across all RRBs. That is the most reliable starting point for any assistant loco pilot salary claim, because the recruiter itself states it.

A pay level is a column in the 7th Pay Commission matrix. Level 2 replaced the old grade pay of ₹1,900, which is why the Railway Board’s running-allowance tables still print “1900/2” against the ALP. Same post, older vocabulary.

Basic pay moves up one cell each year through the annual increment, roughly 3% of basic. DA rises with it, since DA is a percentage of basic. So the ₹19,900 figure describes only the first year of service.

Allowances on a Loco Pilot’s Payslip

Fixed pay for an ALP is built like any central employee’s, with one addition that changes everything. These are the lines that move the payslip:

  • Dearness Allowance: 63% of basic from 1 July 2026, under the Department of Expenditure office memorandum dated 29 October 2026. On ₹19,900 that is ₹12,537. The memorandum notes that railway employees get the rise through a separate Ministry of Railways order, which has historically mirrored the central rate.
  • House Rent Allowance: 30%, 20% or 10% of basic by city class since DA crossed 50% on 1 January 2024. It isn’t paid when railway quarters are allotted, which is common near loco sheds and crew lobbies.
  • Transport Allowance: for Levels 1 and 2, the 7th CPC rate is ₹1,350 in the larger cities and ₹900 elsewhere, plus DA on it. A Level 2 employee whose basic reaches ₹24,200 moves to the higher ₹3,600 or ₹1,800 slab.
  • Kilometrage allowance: paid per 100 km actually run, at rates fixed by the Railway Board for each running grade. This is the big variable, covered in the next section.
  • Deductions: 10% of basic plus DA toward the pension scheme, a small group insurance subscription and income tax.

Running Allowance: The Big Variable in Loco Pilot Salary

Running allowance is what the Railways pay their running staff for the distance they work on trains. It has two parts. Kilometrage Allowance (KMA) is paid at a rate per 100 km run. Allowance in Lieu of Kilometrage (ALK) is the substitute rate, fixed per 160 km, that the order sets for specified duties when running staff are not on a run.

The current rates come from Railway Board letter No. E(P&A)II/2013/RS-14 (Part-2) dated 20 March 2026, which revised them with effect from 1 January 2024 because DA had reached 50% on that date. The letter was issued after the recognized federations pressed for the revision and the Ministry of Finance agreed.

Running gradePay levelKMA per 100 kmALK per 160 kmKMA earned per 1,000 km
Assistant Loco PilotLevel 2₹430₹688₹4,300
Senior Assistant Loco PilotLevel 4₹447₹715₹4,470
Loco Pilot (Goods)Level 6₹594₹951₹5,940
Loco Pilot (Passenger)Level 6₹600₹960₹6,000
Loco Pilot (Mail)Level 6₹606₹969₹6,060

The last column is plain arithmetic on the order’s rates. How many kilometers a loco pilot runs in a month depends on the division, the link (the duty roster), the type of train and rest rules, and the Railways don’t publish a standard monthly figure. That’s why two loco pilots at the same pay level can draw very different salaries, and why any single “loco pilot salary per month” number online is an estimate at best.

Loco Pilot In-Hand Salary: A Worked Illustration

Here is one ALP payslip at entry, worked for two city types. Treat it as an estimate, not an official slip. It assumes no railway quarters, a 10% pension deduction and no tax yet deducted. The kilometrage line assumes 3,000 km in the month purely to show the arithmetic; that distance is our assumption, not a published norm.

ComponentX class cityZ class town
Basic pay₹19,900₹19,900
DA at 63%₹12,537₹12,537
HRA₹5,970 (30%)₹1,990 (10%)
Transport allowance with DA₹2,201₹1,467
Pension contribution at 10% of basic plus DAminus ₹3,244minus ₹3,244
Fixed-pay in-hand before taxabout ₹37,364about ₹32,650
Kilometrage at an assumed 3,000 kmplus ₹12,900plus ₹12,900
Estimated total before taxabout ₹50,264about ₹45,550

The fixed part differs by about ₹4,700 between the two towns, and all of that is housing and transport allowance. The kilometrage line is bigger than that gap. An ALP who runs less in a month draws less; one with heavier links draws more. Railway quarters remove the HRA line but bring a licence fee, so the fixed figure can drop below the Z-town column.

How to Become a Loco Pilot

The only door is the RRB ALP recruitment, which the RRB railway exams guide covers along with NTPC and Level 1. CEN 01/2026 set these conditions:

  • Age: 18 to 30 years on 1 July 2026, with the usual category relaxations.
  • Education: Class 10 plus an ITI in a listed trade (Fitter, Electrician, Mechanic (Diesel), Electronics Mechanic and others) or a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in those trades; or Class 10 plus a three-year diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering. An engineering degree in those disciplines is accepted in place of the diploma.
  • Medical: standard A-1, the strictest railway category, with no alternative appointment for those found unfit.
  • Stages: CBT-1 (75 questions in 60 minutes, screening only), CBT-2, a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), document verification and a medical examination.

Final merit gives equal 50:50 weight to CBT-2 Part A and the CBAT. Applications for the 2026 cycle ran from 15 May to 14 June 2026, and the RRBs’ tentative schedule placed CBT-1 from 3 to 5 November 2026. The apprenticeship route in the eligibility list is the same scheme described in the apprenticeship training note.

Duties of an Assistant Loco Pilot and Loco Pilot

An ALP works in the cab alongside the loco pilot and shares responsibility for the safe working of the train. The loco pilot is in charge of the locomotive on the run; the ALP watches signals, calls them out, monitors the locomotive and assists in emergencies.

The routine work includes:

  • signing on at the crew lobby, a breath test and briefing before the run;
  • checking the locomotive and brakes before departure;
  • calling and acknowledging signals throughout the run;
  • recording faults and handing over the locomotive at the end of duty.

The job is rostered round the clock, so nights, weekends and outstation rest are part of it. That irregularity is the reason running allowance exists. The Indian Railways note explains the zones and divisions where loco pilots are based, and the railway zones list shows which zone each RRB recruits for.

Promotions: From ALP to Loco Pilot (Mail)

The running ladder has five rungs, and the Railway Board’s own rate table confirms the level of each:

  1. Assistant Loco Pilot, Level 2.
  2. Senior Assistant Loco Pilot, Level 4 (entry ₹25,500).
  3. Loco Pilot (Goods), Level 6 (entry ₹35,400).
  4. Loco Pilot (Passenger), Level 6.
  5. Loco Pilot (Mail/Express), Level 6.

The last three grades share Level 6, so the step from goods to passenger to mail shows up mainly in the kilometrage rate and the class of train, not in basic pay. At Level 6, a loco pilot’s fixed pay in an X class city works out to roughly ₹68,000 before tax at the level’s entry cell (₹35,400 basic, 63% DA, 30% HRA, transport allowance with DA, less pension), plus kilometrage at ₹594 to ₹606 per 100 km. That figure is an estimate; a promoted employee’s basic is fixed in a cell of the new level based on the pay already drawn, which is usually above the entry cell.

Beyond the running grades, experienced loco pilots can move to supervisory posts such as Loco Inspector, through departmental selection. Timelines depend on vacancies in each division, so no one can promise a year.

Loco Pilot Compared With Sibling Railway Posts

The comparison below sets the loco cab against the other running branch, the guards, whom the Railways now call Train Managers. Levels and rates come from the same Railway Board letter.

PostPay levelKMA per 100 kmRecruited through
Railway Level 1 posts (Track Maintainer, Pointsman and others)Level 1Not running staffRRB Level 1 CEN
Assistant Loco PilotLevel 2₹430RRB ALP CEN

Loco Pilot (Goods)Level 6₹594Promotion
Mail/Express Train ManagerLevel 6₹549Promotion
Loco Pilot (Mail)Level 6₹606Promotion

Level 1 pay, its in-hand estimate and the posts under it are covered in this wave’s separate note on Railway Group D salary. For a non-railway comparison at Level 6, the sub inspector salary note works through the same basic pay without kilometrage.

What the 8th Pay Commission Means for Loco Pilots

The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted by notification on 3 November 2025, chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. As of 3 November 2026 its official site shows it still consulting, with its latest notified state visit in Mumbai on 22 and 23 October 2026, and no report submitted. The 8th Pay Commission representations update covers the consultation stage.

Railway employees are central government staff, so a new matrix will reach ALPs and loco pilots once the government accepts the report. Kilometrage rates are a separate question: the Railway Board revises them by its own order, as the March 2026 letter shows. New entrants also choose between the National Pension System and the Unified Pension Scheme, explained in the UPS and NPS comparison.

For an aspirant with an ITI or diploma, the honest reading is this: the ALP’s Level 2 basic looks modest, but kilometrage and a clear ladder to Level 6 make the loco cab one of the better-paid technical careers open after Class 10. The price is irregular hours and a strict A-1 medical, so check the vision standard before you invest months in preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the starting loco pilot salary in Indian Railways?

Every loco pilot starts as an Assistant Loco Pilot at Pay Level 2 with ₹19,900 basic pay, as printed in RRB CEN 01/2026. With 63% DA from July 2026, basic plus DA is ₹32,437. Fixed in-hand pay is roughly ₹32,000 to ₹37,000 before kilometrage, as an estimate.

What is the assistant loco pilot salary per month with running allowance?

It depends on how many kilometers the ALP runs. The Railway Board rate is ₹430 per 100 km, so every 1,000 km adds ₹4,300. On an assumed 3,000 km month, our estimate puts total pay at about ₹45,000 to ₹50,000 before tax.

What is kilometrage allowance for loco pilots?

Kilometrage allowance is the running allowance paid to loco and train staff for every 100 km they run. The current rates, effective from 1 January 2024, were set by a Railway Board letter dated 20 March 2026. They range from ₹430 for an ALP to ₹606 for a Loco Pilot (Mail).

What is the pay level of a loco pilot?

An Assistant Loco Pilot is at Level 2 and a Senior Assistant Loco Pilot at Level 4. Loco Pilot (Goods), Loco Pilot (Passenger) and Loco Pilot (Mail) are all at Level 6, with ₹35,400 as the entry cell. The difference between the three Level 6 grades lies mainly in the kilometrage rate.

Can I join Indian Railways directly as a loco pilot?

No. The Railway Recruitment Boards recruit only Assistant Loco Pilots. Loco Pilot (Goods), Passenger and Mail are reached by promotion after service as an ALP and Senior ALP.

What qualification is needed for an RRB ALP job?

CEN 01/2026 asks for Class 10 plus an ITI or a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in a listed trade, or Class 10 plus a three-year engineering diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering. A degree in those branches is accepted in place of the diploma. The age limit was 18 to 30 years on 1 July 2026.

Is DA paid on kilometrage allowance?

The DA order defines basic pay as the pay in the pay matrix level, so DA is calculated on basic pay, not on kilometrage. Kilometrage rates are fixed amounts that the Railway Board revises by separate order, as it did when DA crossed 50% in January 2024.

Will the 8th Pay Commission raise loco pilot salary?

It is expected to revise basic pay, but nothing is fixed yet. The commission was constituted on 3 November 2025 and was still consulting in October 2026. Kilometrage rates would change only through a later Railway Board order.
