Railway Group D Salary: Level 1 Pay, In-Hand Estimate and the 14 Posts

Railway Group D salary explained: Level 1 basic pay, 63% DA, HRA by city class, a labelled in-hand estimate, the posts in CEN 09/2025 and promotions.

Illustration for the Railway Group D salary guide on Anantam IAS

Railway Group D salary starts at Pay Level 1 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, which means ₹18,000 basic pay for every post in the Railways’ Level 1 recruitment, from Track Maintainer to Pointsman. With the 63% Dearness Allowance in force from 1 July 2026, basic plus DA is ₹29,340. A practical in-hand estimate for a new Level 1 employee is about ₹28,000 to ₹34,000 a month before income tax, and the spread comes almost entirely from city class and whether railway quarters are allotted.

The common mix-up is the name. “Group D” is what everyone searches, but the Railways no longer advertise a Group D. The recruitment is now called Level 1, and RRB’s notice for the current cycle is titled “Recruitment for Various Posts in Level 1 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix”. A second mix-up is that the 14 posts pay differently. They don’t at entry: all start on the same basic. This note gives the one pay figure, the allowances that change it and the source for each.

Railway Group D Salary at a Glance

The table uses CEN 09/2025, the Level 1 notice announced in Employment News on 27 December 2025 (applications opened on 31 January 2026), as the benchmark.

Where the Level 1 Figure Comes From

The figure is in the notice itself. RRB’s CEN No. 09/2025 lists “Various Posts in Level 1 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix” with an initial pay of ₹18,000, an age band of 18 to 33 years on 1 January 2026 and 22,195 vacancies. Every post in the notice carries the same level, so the salary of group D in railway service is one number at entry, whatever the department.

Level 1 is the first column of the 7th Pay Commission matrix and replaced the old grade pay of ₹1,800. It is also the lowest level in the central matrix, which is why ₹18,000 is often called the central government’s minimum basic pay.

Basic pay rises one cell each year through the annual increment, about 3% of basic, and DA rises with it because DA is a percentage of basic. The second-year basic in Level 1 is ₹18,500, so the entry figure describes the first year only.

Allowances and Deductions on a Level 1 Payslip

Basic pay is a little over half of the gross. These are the lines that move a Level 1 payslip:

  • Dearness Allowance: 63% of basic from 1 July 2026, under the Department of Expenditure office memorandum dated 29 October 2026, up from 60% set by the memorandum of 22 April 2026. On ₹18,000 that is ₹11,340. The memorandum says railway employees get the rise through a separate Ministry of Railways order, which has historically followed the central rate.
  • House Rent Allowance: 30% of basic in X class cities, 20% in Y and 10% in Z since DA crossed 50% on 1 January 2024. It stops when railway quarters are allotted, and a licence fee is deducted instead.
  • Transport Allowance: ₹1,350 in the larger cities and ₹900 elsewhere for Levels 1 and 2, plus DA on it. Once basic reaches ₹24,200, a Level 1 employee moves to the ₹3,600 or ₹1,800 slab under the 2 August 2017 order.
  • Deductions: 10% of basic plus DA toward the pension scheme, a small group insurance subscription and income tax.

Railway employees also receive non-cash benefits that don’t show on the payslip, such as railway passes for travel and treatment at railway hospitals. Their scale depends on service rules, so they’re left out of the cash estimate below.

Railway Group D Salary Per Month: A Worked Illustration

Here is one Level 1 payslip at entry, worked three ways. Treat these as estimates, not official salary slips. They assume a 10% pension deduction and no income tax deducted yet.

The gap between the first and last column is about ₹6,000, and it comes from housing alone. A Track Maintainer in a metro and a Pointsman in a small-town station start on the same basic but take home different amounts.

The new DA rate also brings arrears. The 63% rate applies from 1 July 2026, so the difference for the months already paid at 60% is due once the railway order is issued. On ₹18,000 basic, the three-point rise is worth ₹540 a month.

Posts Under Railway Group D (Level 1)

CEN 09/2025 lists 14 post categories across five departments. Many share a name but differ by unit, such as a workshop or a diesel shed. The table groups them by department as the notice does.

DepartmentPosts in CEN 09/2025
EngineeringTrack Maintainer Grade IV, Assistant Track Machine, Assistant Bridge, Assistant P.Way
TrafficPointsman B
ElectricalAssistant TRD, Assistant Operations (Electrical), Assistant TL and AC, Assistant Loco Shed (Electrical), including workshop and diesel shed variants
Signal and TelecommunicationAssistant (S and T), including a workshop variant
MechanicalAssistant Carriage and Wagon

Track Maintainer Grade IV carries by far the most vacancies; in Western Railway’s table alone it accounts for 1,599 posts, against 751 for Pointsman B. Medical standards differ by post: Pointsman B needs A2, Assistant Track Machine needs A3, most posts need B1 and the workshop posts need C1. Candidates choose posts by preference within one railway, so the medical standard decides which posts are realistic for each applicant.

How to Get a Railway Level 1 Job

The door is the RRB Level 1 recruitment, covered with NTPC and ALP in the RRB railway exams guide. CEN 09/2025 set these conditions:

  • Age: 18 to 33 years on 1 January 2026, with category relaxations.
  • Education: Class 10 pass, ITI, an equivalent qualification or a National Apprenticeship Certificate granted by NCVT. Course Completed Act Apprentices trained in railway establishments have a reserved share, linked to the scheme in the apprenticeship training note.
  • CBT: 100 questions in 90 minutes, with 25 from General Science, 25 from Mathematics, 30 from General Intelligence and Reasoning and 20 from General Awareness and Current Affairs. Each wrong answer costs one-third of a mark.
  • PET: men lift and carry 35 kg over 100 m in 2 minutes and run 1,000 m in 4 minutes 15 seconds; women carry 20 kg over 100 m in 2 minutes and run 1,000 m in 5 minutes 40 seconds. It is qualifying only.
  • Final stages: document verification and a medical examination.

Applications for CEN 09/2025 opened on 31 January 2026, and Corrigendum No. 4 extended the closing date to 9 March 2026. The RRBs received 52,39,760 applications (tentative figure, notice dated 25 August 2026) against 22,195 posts, and the revised schedule placed the CBT over 16 days in August 2026. Results, PET dates and later notices appear on the RRB Chandigarh website and the other boards’ sites.

Duties of Level 1 Railway Staff

Level 1 staff do the hands-on work that keeps track, signals and rolling stock safe. The work depends on the post:

  • Track Maintainer: patrols and maintains the permanent way (the track and its fittings) in a gang.
  • Pointsman: operates points and signals at a station under the Station Master’s direction and helps with shunting.
  • Assistants in Electrical, S and T and Mechanical: support technicians in sheds, workshops and depots on locomotives, coaches, overhead equipment and signalling gear.

Much of this is outdoor shift work in all weather. The railway zones list shows which zone and division a candidate’s chosen railway covers, which decides where a selected candidate is likely to serve.

Promotions and Pay Growth

Level 1 is an entry rung, not a ceiling. Staff move up through departmental promotion within their cadre, for example from Track Maintainer Grade IV toward higher track maintainer grades, and through departmental competitive examinations open to serving staff. Each step depends on the cadre’s rules and vacancies, so timelines vary widely by division.

Where promotion doesn’t come, the Modified Assured Career Progression scheme gives a financial upgrade to the next pay level at 10, 20 and 30 years of regular service, subject to the scheme’s conditions. Because each upgrade is one level, a Level 1 employee who is never promoted can still reach a higher level’s pay over a career.

Level 1 Compared With Sibling Posts

This comparison helps when choosing between the Level 1 and ALP notices, which overlap for ITI holders.

PostPay levelEntry basicRecruited throughExtra pay element
Railway Level 1 postsLevel 1₹18,000RRB Level 1 CENNone beyond standard allowances
Assistant Loco PilotLevel 2₹19,900RRB ALP CENKilometrage allowance per 100 km
Central Level 1 posts outside the Railways (such as MTS)Level 1₹18,000Staff Selection CommissionNone beyond standard allowances

The ALP route pays more because of running allowance, but it demands an ITI or diploma and the strict A-1 medical. This wave’s separate note on loco pilot salary covers that route and its kilometrage rates in detail. The old pension question also comes up often; the old pension scheme note explains the background to today’s contributory schemes.

What the 8th Pay Commission Means for Level 1 Staff

The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted by notification on 3 November 2025, chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. As of 3 November 2026 its official site shows it still consulting, with its latest notified state visit in Mumbai on 22 and 23 October 2026, and no report submitted. The 8th Pay Commission representations update covers the consultation stage.

Level 1 pay is the base of the whole matrix, so it is the figure a new commission’s fitment factor is applied to first. Until the government accepts a report, ₹18,000 and the DA orders above decide the pay.

For an aspirant, the honest reading is this: a Railway Level 1 job pays the central minimum at entry, around ₹30,000 a month in hand, with full central allowances and a pension contribution. With more than 52 lakh applications for about 22,000 posts, the competition is the hard part; if you hold an ITI and meet the A-1 medical, the ALP notice deserves a look too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the railway group d salary per month?

A Level 1 railway employee starts on ₹18,000 basic pay, as printed in RRB CEN 09/2025. With 63% DA from July 2026, basic plus DA is ₹29,340. After HRA, transport allowance and the pension deduction, in-hand pay is roughly ₹28,000 to ₹34,000 a month as an estimate.

Is Group D still a category in Indian Railways?

The Railways now recruit these posts as Level 1 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, and RRB notices use that term. Group D is the popular name that survives in searches. The pay and posts are the same ones the notices describe as Level 1.

Do all Group D posts get the same salary?

Yes, at entry. Every post in CEN 09/2025, from Track Maintainer Grade IV to Pointsman B and the Assistant posts, starts at Level 1 with ₹18,000 basic. In-hand pay differs only through city class, housing and later increments.

What is the in-hand salary of a Track Maintainer?

A Track Maintainer Grade IV starts at Level 1 like every other post in the notice. Our estimate puts in-hand pay at about ₹34,000 in an X class city and about ₹29,700 in a Z class town before tax. With railway quarters, HRA stops and a licence fee is deducted.

What qualification is needed for RRB Group D?

CEN 09/2025 asks for a Class 10 pass, an ITI, an equivalent qualification or a National Apprenticeship Certificate granted by NCVT. The age band was 18 to 33 years on 1 January 2026, with relaxations for reserved categories.

How much did DA increase for railway Group D staff in 2026?

Central DA went from 58% to 60% from January 2026 and from 60% to 63% from July 2026, under memoranda dated 22 April and 29 October 2026. On ₹18,000 basic, the July rise adds ₹540 a month. Railway staff receive it through a Ministry of Railways order.

What is the promotion path after Group D in railways?

Staff rise through departmental promotion within their cadre and through departmental competitive examinations for serving staff. If no promotion comes, the Modified Assured Career Progression scheme gives the next pay level at 10, 20 and 30 years of service.

Will the 8th Pay Commission increase Group D salary?

It is expected to, but nothing is fixed. The commission was constituted on 3 November 2025 and was still consulting in October 2026. Level 1 pay will change only after the government accepts its report and issues a new matrix.
