NDA Exam: Pattern, Structure, and Marking
UPSC conducts the NDA examination twice a year — NDA I (April/May) and NDA II (September). Both follow the same pattern.

SSB Interview
Written exam qualifiers are called for a 5-day Service Selection Board (SSB) interview. The SSB assesses Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) through:

- Day 2–4: Psychological tests, Group Testing Officer tasks, Personal Interview
- Day 5: Conference round

Merit List and Medical Examination
Final selection is based on SSB interview marks. Written exam marks are not counted for merit — the written exam is only a qualifying filter. Candidates who clear SSB undergo a medical examination by an Army/Navy/Air Force Medical Board.

NDA Eligibility: Who Can Apply
NDA eligibility is strictly defined and differs slightly by wing.
Age Limit
- Minimum: 16.5 years
- Maximum: 19.5 years
- Age calculated as of the first day of the month in which the course commences
This means NDA is for students who are in Class 12 or have just passed Class 12. You can't appear after a long gap.

Gender
NDA was opened to women by a Supreme Court order in 2021. The Supreme Court (in Kush Kalra vs Union of India) held that the exclusion of women from NDA was unconstitutional. Women were first inducted into NDA with the 2022 course.
Nationality
Indian citizens, Nepalese subjects, and Bhutanese subjects are eligible. Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962 are also eligible with a citizenship certificate.
NDA Training: The Three-Year Program
NDA training is a 3-year program divided into 6 terms (semesters). After NDA, cadets go to service-specific pre-commissioning academies.
Academic Training
NDA cadets pursue a B.Sc. degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Depending on their wing:
- Army Wing: B.Sc. (Computer Science) or B.Sc. (General with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)

Military Training at NDA
Beyond academics, every cadet — regardless of wing — undergoes intensive military training:
- Parade and drill under Ustaads (drill instructors)
- Obstacle training — the 600-metre obstacle course is infamous
- Equestrian training — horse riding is mandatory
- Weapon training — small arms, map reading
- Water sports — NDA has a sailing club on Khadakwasla Lake
- Aerial activities — gliding and parachuting introduction
Squadron System
NDA cadets live in Squadrons (like houses in school). Each squadron has 60–70 cadets from different wings. The squadron system builds inter-service and inter-year bonding. Senior cadets (Sixth Term) hold leadership roles within squadrons.

After 3 years at NDA, cadets join:

Three Wings of NDA
NDA trains cadets for all three armed services, but the wings have distinct identities.
Army Wing
The largest wing. Army wing cadets join IMA after NDA and are commissioned into infantry, armoured, artillery, signals, engineers, or other arms/services of the Indian Army.
Naval Wing
Navy wing cadets join INA Ezhimala in Kerala after NDA. They're commissioned as Sub-Lieutenants and can join the Executive Branch, Engineering Branch, Electrical Branch, or Education Branch of the Indian Navy.
Air Force Wing
Air Force wing cadets join AFA Dundigal after NDA. They can become pilots (Flying Branch) or technical officers (Ground Duty). Flying branch candidates undergo rigorous flying aptitude tests even during NDA.
NDA Vacancies and Competition
NDA notifies approximately 400 vacancies in each NDA exam (NDA I and NDA II), totalling about 800 per year. Of these, roughly 208 are for Army, 42 for Navy, and 120 for Air Force in a typical notification.
About 4–5 lakh candidates appear for each NDA exam. The written exam cuts this down to around 7,000–9,000 who appear for SSB. Final selection is approximately 400–450 per exam.
UPSC Role in NDA
UPSC's role in NDA is limited to conducting the written examination. UPSC doesn't conduct the SSB or medical examination — those are handled by the armed forces themselves through Service Selection Boards.
UPSC releases the notification, conducts the written exam at centres across India, declares results, and sends the list to the services for SSB. From SSB onwards, the Ministry of Defence takes over.
