Corals are marine invertebrate animals in the phylum Cnidaria. Each individual coral is a polyp — a small, soft-bodied animal that secretes a hard calcium carbonate skeleton. Polyps live in colonies of thousands of genetically identical clones, grown through a process called budding. Thousands of colonies stacked over centuries form coral reefs — the rainforests of the sea.
Reefs cover less than 0.1% of the ocean floor but support nearly 25% of marine species. Oxybenzone, octinoxate and other UV-filter chemicals from sunscreens accumulate in reef zones with heavy tourism and promote viral infections in hard corals. Hawaii, Palau and parts of the Caribbean have banned oxybenzone-based sunscreens.
