You can download your ration card online in four ways: through the NFSA portal at nfsa.gov.in, the Mera Ration 2.0 mobile app, DigiLocker, or your own state’s food and civil supplies portal. All four routes are free. The downloaded e-ration card carries the same details as the printed card and is accepted for ration collection and as an identity record. This guide walks through each route step by step, with verified links to the ten biggest state portals.
What an e-Ration Card Is
A ration card is issued by your state’s food and civil supplies department. It lists the head of the family, all members, the card category (such as Priority Household or Antyodaya), and the fair price shop you are attached to.
An e-ration card is simply the digital copy of that record, downloaded as a PDF or fetched into an app. It is not a separate card and needs no separate application. If your family already holds a ration card, the digital version already exists in your state’s database — downloading it takes a few minutes.
One important point before the steps: ration cards are a state subject. The central NFSA portal and the Mera Ration app pull data from state databases, but the download experience differs from state to state. If one route does not work in your state, try another — the data underneath is the same.
Who Can Download It, and What You Need
Anyone whose family holds an existing ration card can download it. You will need one or more of these details, depending on the route:
- Your ration card number (on the old card or any ration receipt)
- The Aadhaar number of a family member listed on the card, with its linked mobile number for OTP
- Your registered mobile number
- For some state portals, your district, block, and fair price shop details
If your family does not yet have a ration card, you must first apply through your state food portal or a local ration office. The download routes below only fetch existing cards; they do not create new ones.
Route 1: The NFSA Portal
The National Food Security Act portal is the central dashboard for the public distribution system. It routes you to your state’s records.
- Open nfsa.gov.in.
- In the menu, go to Ration Cards → Ration Card Details on State Portals.
- Pick your state from the list. You are redirected to that state’s PDS site.
- Drill down: select your district, then the block or town, then your fair price shop.
- The shop’s card list opens. Find your ration card number and click it to view the full card details.
- Use the print or save option on the state page to keep a PDF copy.
This route is best when you do not remember your card number — you can reach your card by walking down from district to shop. The downside is that a few state links on the dashboard lead to report pages rather than a clean card download; in that case, use your state portal directly (Route 4).
Route 2: The Mera Ration 2.0 App
Mera Ration 2.0 is the official app of the Department of Food and Public Distribution, built by the National Informatics Centre. It is available on Google Play and the App Store.
- Install the app and choose your language.
- Select Beneficiary login and enter the Aadhaar number of any member listed on the card.
- Verify the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- The dashboard opens with your family’s card: members, entitlement, and the attached fair price shop.
- Use the ration card option to view and download the digital card.
The app also handles related chores — checking your monthly entitlement and past ration transactions, finding nearby fair price shops, and managing member details — so it is worth keeping installed even after the download.
Route 3: DigiLocker
DigiLocker is the government’s digital document wallet, and most state food departments issue ration cards into it. A document fetched in DigiLocker is deemed legally at par with the original under the IT Act framework — see digilocker.gov.in.
- Log in to the DigiLocker app or website with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- In Search Documents, type “ration card”.
- Select your state’s Food and Civil Supplies (or PDS) department from the results.
- Enter your ration card number and any other field the form asks for, tick the consent box, and click Get Document.
- The card appears under Issued Documents. Open it there anytime, or download the PDF.
The advantage of this route is permanence: once fetched, the card stays in your locker and refreshes from the issuing database. If you are new to the platform, our explainer on what DigiLocker is and how to use it covers setup in detail.
Route 4: Your State Food Portal
Every state runs its own food and civil supplies portal, and for many people this is the fastest route because it offers a direct “ration card details” or “download e-ration card” search by card number.
The general steps are the same everywhere: open the portal, find the ration card details/search option, enter your card number (or drill down by district and shop), and print or save the card page as PDF.
Here are the portals of the ten most populous states. Every URL below was checked and loading in July 2026.
| State | Food / Ration Portal |
|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh | fcs.up.gov.in |
| Maharashtra | mahafood.gov.in |
| Bihar | epds.bihar.gov.in |
| West Bengal | food.wb.gov.in |
| Madhya Pradesh | food.mp.gov.in |
| Rajasthan | food.rajasthan.gov.in |
| Tamil Nadu | tnpds.gov.in |
| Karnataka | ahara.karnataka.gov.in |
| Gujarat | ipds.gujarat.gov.in |
| Andhra Pradesh | civilsupplies.ap.gov.in |
Portal names vary — Tamil Nadu calls it TNPDS, Karnataka calls it Ahara — but each is the official department site, and each links to its card search from the home page.
Is the Downloaded Card Valid?
Yes. The e-ration card is a copy of the same government record as the printed card. It is valid for drawing your foodgrain entitlement at the fair price shop, where your identity is anyway verified by Aadhaar authentication on the shop’s ePoS machine, not by the physical card. It also works as a supporting document wherever ration card details are asked for.
Two related points worth knowing:
- One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC). Under this scheme, an NFSA ration card is portable across India. A migrant worker can draw their entitlement from any fair price shop in any state through Aadhaar authentication — the same card, anywhere. Details are on the NFSA portal.
- The card is family-level, not individual. Any listed member with an Aadhaar-linked mobile can download it, and the same card serves the whole household.
Keep the PDF alongside your other government documents — it pairs naturally with records like your health card, which has a similar process we cover in the guide to Ayushman card download.
Troubleshooting and Status Check
- Card not found on the NFSA route. State databases occasionally sync with a lag, and a few state links open report pages instead of card search. Go directly to your state portal from the table above and search there.
- No OTP on Mera Ration or DigiLocker. Both authenticate against the mobile number linked to Aadhaar. If your number has changed, update it at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra first; no ration-side fix exists for this.
- Applied recently and nothing shows. New applications appear only after the state approves the card. Check the application status option on your state portal with your application reference number.
- Family member missing on the card. Additions and deletions are handled through your state portal or the Mera Ration app’s manage-member option, with Aadhaar as the supporting document. Download the card again after the change is approved.
- eKYC pending. States are progressively requiring Aadhaar eKYC for every member on the card. If your entitlement is on hold, complete eKYC at the fair price shop or through the Mera Ration app, then re-download the updated card.
Since ration cards also act as the gateway document for several welfare programmes, it is worth keeping the details current — many entries in our government schemes list use the ration card to establish eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download my ration card using just my Aadhaar number?
Yes, through the Mera Ration 2.0 app. Log in with the Aadhaar number of any member listed on the card and verify the OTP on the Aadhaar-linked mobile. The app fetches the family card without needing the card number. DigiLocker and most state portals, by contrast, ask for the ration card number itself.
Is a downloaded e-ration card valid at the ration shop?
Yes. Entitlement at the fair price shop is verified through Aadhaar authentication on the ePoS device, so the digital card works exactly like the printed one. A DigiLocker-issued copy is additionally deemed at par with the original document.
Is there any fee for downloading a ration card?
No. The NFSA portal, Mera Ration 2.0, DigiLocker, and every state food portal provide the download free. Be wary of unofficial websites that charge for “ration card PDF download” — they are not government services.
Can I download the ration card of another state?
You can download only the card your family holds, from the state that issued it. What ONORC gives you is portability of use — you can draw your entitlement from a fair price shop in any state — not a second card in the new state.
I lost my ration card and do not know the number. What do I do?
Use the NFSA route: nfsa.gov.in → Ration Card Details on State Portals → your state → district → block → fair price shop. The shop-wise list shows every card attached to it, and you can identify yours by the head of family’s name. Your fair price shop dealer can also tell you the number.
How do I add or remove a family member before downloading?
Member changes go through your state food portal or the Mera Ration 2.0 app, with Aadhaar as the proof. Once the state approves the modification, download the card again — the new PDF reflects the updated member list.
Does downloading the card renew or extend its validity?
A ration card does not expire in the normal course; it stays valid until surrendered or cancelled. What states increasingly require is periodic Aadhaar eKYC of members. Keep eKYC complete, and the downloaded card remains your current, valid record.
