The Vande Metro — officially renamed Namo Bharat Rapid Rail in September 2024 — is India's first indigenously designed inter-city commuter train, built for short-distance high-frequency travel of under 250 km. Flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 16 September 2024, it slots between long-distance Vande Bharat Express trains and city metros, targeting the daily commuter and short-haul traveller who has long depended on crowded MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) and DEMU services.

Manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, the train is a 12-coach self-propelled EMU with a design speed of 130 km/h and an operational ceiling of 110 km/h, complete with automatic doors, air conditioning, and modern safety electronics.

Renaming to Namo Bharat Rapid Rail

On 16 September 2024, the day of its inauguration, the Ministry of Railways renamed the Vande Metro service to "Namo Bharat Rapid Rail" to bring it under a unified branding with the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) running between Delhi–Meerut. The train design and specifications remain unchanged.

Design and Technology

The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail incorporates several features previously seen only on premium long-distance trains or metros:

  • Automatic plug-type doors with door-closing-before-start interlock
  • Full air conditioning with temperature-controlled zones
  • Regenerative braking — returning up to 30% of energy to the grid
  • CCTV surveillance across coaches and cabs
  • Emergency talk-back units for passenger–driver communication
  • LED lighting and information display systems
  • Wide vestibules between coaches for passenger flow
  • Modular toilets with bio-vacuum technology
  • Fire and smoke detection systems
  • Kavach (Train Collision Avoidance System) compatible rake
  • Aerodynamic nose cone to reduce drag at higher speeds

Self-Propelled EMU Design

Unlike conventional trains which rely on a separate locomotive pulling coaches, the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail is a distributed-traction EMU — traction motors are spread across multiple coaches. This allows:

  • Faster acceleration and deceleration (critical for short inter-station runs)
  • Higher operating efficiency
  • Reversible operation without turning the train around

The First Route: Bhuj–Ahmedabad

The inaugural service runs between Bhuj in Kutch and Ahmedabad, covering a total of 359 km in about 5 hours and 45 minutes — roughly an hour faster than the existing express services on the same corridor.

The route was chosen because it connects the industrial ports and Kutch region with Gujarat's commercial capital and feeds significant daily commuter traffic.

Second Service: Jaynagar–Patna

A second Namo Bharat Rapid Rail service was flagged off on 24 April 2025 between Jaynagar (Bihar) and Patna, a 266 km corridor served by a 16-coach rake — the first such service outside Gujarat. Its longer 16-coach formation, against the 12 coaches of the Bhuj–Ahmedabad rake, reflects the heavier commuter density of the Mithila–Patna belt. With two services now running, Indian Railways is progressively extending the format to other sub-250 km corridors.

Fare Structure

Fares are deliberately kept economical, pitched between ordinary EMU/MEMU rates and Vande Bharat Chair Car rates. Indicative fares on the Ahmedabad–Bhuj route launched at around Rs. 455 for the end-to-end journey, with proportionally lower fares for intermediate segments. Monthly and seasonal passes are also permissible.

Replacement of MEMU and DEMU

Most MEMU (electric) and DEMU (diesel) rakes in service today are 10–30 years old, running without air conditioning and with minimal passenger amenities. The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail offers:

  • Full AC vs non-AC
  • Faster acceleration vs slower, older rolling stock
  • Modern safety systems (Kavach, CCTV, emergency talk-back)
  • Better aesthetics and ride comfort

Over time, Indian Railways plans to phase out older EMU/MEMU/DEMU services on suitable routes.
