India is home to 18% of the world’s population but only 4% of its freshwater resources. That arithmetic, on its own, explains why water stress has moved from a regional emergency to a national macroeconomic risk. NITI Aayog‘s Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) reports have flagged that by 2030, India’s water demand is projected to be twice the available supply, implying severe water scarcity and a loss of up to 6% of GDP.
The numbers behind this are stark. Roughly 820 million Indians live in river basins where per capita annual water availability is close to or below 1,000 cubic metres — the Falkenmark Index threshold for water scarcity. About 82% of rural households lack individual piped water (though JJM has narrowed this).
