DSP Salary: Pay Level, In-Hand Estimate and How UP and Bihar Differ

DSP salary explained: UP Level 10 and Bihar Level 9 from official notices, 60% DA, a labelled in-hand estimate, duties and promotion to IPS.

Illustration for the DSP guide on Anantam IAS

DSP salary depends on the state, because a Deputy Superintendent of Police is a State Police Service officer paid under that state’s rules. In Uttar Pradesh the DSP sits at Pay Level 10 with ₹56,100 basic pay, and with 60% Dearness Allowance the basic-plus-DA figure is ₹89,760. A practical in-hand estimate for a new UP DSP is roughly ₹80,000 to ₹95,000 a month before income tax. Bihar, by contrast, places its DSP one level lower, at Level 9.

DSP stands for Deputy Superintendent of Police, and the confusion that follows the term is about who holds it. Many readers think a DSP is a junior IPS officer. It isn’t. A young IPS officer in the same field role is called an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), belongs to an all-India service and is paid under central rules. A DSP is recruited by the state public service commission and serves the state. This note keeps the two apart and gives each pay figure with its source.

DSP Salary at a Glance

The table uses the UP post as the main benchmark, because UPPSC prints the pay level and the revised scale in its post details for the PCS 2025 exam.

Where the Pay Level Comes From

The pay level comes from each commission’s own recruitment documents, not from a national table. That’s why a single “DSP salary per month” figure for all of India doesn’t exist.

For Uttar Pradesh, UPPSC’s post details for the Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Exam 2025 list Deputy Superintendent of Police (Home, Police) in Group 1 Executive with the old scale ₹15,600 to ₹39,100 plus grade pay ₹5,400, revised to ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500 at Pay Matrix Level 10. The same document shows 56 DSP posts and asks for a graduate degree plus prescribed physical standards. Deputy Collector, the post that leads to SDM, sits at the same Level 10.

For Bihar, BPSC’s corrigendum to the Integrated 72nd Combined Competitive Exam lists the DSP of the Bihar Police Service at Level 9. Level 9 begins at ₹53,100 in the 7th Pay Commission matrix; the corrigendum itself prints only the level, not the rupee figure.

So the same rank title carries a one-level difference between two neighboring states. That difference is real, and it’s the reason any DSP salary claim without a state attached should be read with suspicion.

Allowances and Deductions

Basic pay is only the start. A DSP’s payslip in any state is built from the same kinds of components, though each state sets its own rates:

  • Dearness Allowance: the central rate is 60% of basic from 1 January 2026, under an office memorandum dated 22 April 2026. Uttar Pradesh announced the same 60% for its employees in May 2026. On ₹56,100 basic, 60% DA is ₹33,660.
  • House rent allowance: paid under the state’s city categories, and not paid when government accommodation is allotted, which is common for a DSP posted to a circle or sub-division.
  • Official vehicle: usually provided for duty. It’s a working facility, not cash salary.
  • Deductions: NPS at 10% of basic plus DA, group insurance and income tax.

UP DSP In-Hand Salary: A Worked Illustration

The table works one entry-level UP DSP payslip. It’s an estimate, not an official slip: it assumes NPS at 10% and shows HRA and allowances as variable because they depend on accommodation and posting.

ComponentUP DSP, Level 10
Basic pay₹56,100
DA at 60%₹33,660
Basic plus DA₹89,760
NPS at 10% of basic plus DAminus ₹8,976
Basic plus DA after NPS₹80,784
HRA and other allowancesDepends on posting and accommodation
Estimated in-hand before taxAbout ₹80,000 to ₹95,000

The lower end describes a DSP in government quarters drawing little beyond basic and DA. The upper end assumes HRA and allowances in a larger city. Income tax at this level is small under the new regime, but it depends on the officer’s choice of regime and other income, so the table stops before tax.

DSP Salary by State

Each state’s commission prints its own level. The rows below are limited to those we could trace to an official document published by the commission.

Bihar’s 72nd CCE was advertised on 5 May 2026, and a later corrigendum cut the DSP vacancies from 22 to 20; BPSC has also issued a notice postponing the preliminary exam. Readers from other states should go to the current advertisement of their own commission, such as the BPSC or UPPSC notices, rather than borrow a neighbour’s figure.

How to Become a DSP

A DSP is recruited through the state civil services exam, the same exam that fills Deputy Collector and other Group A or Group B state posts. In UP that exam is the PCS conducted by UPPSC; the UPPCS guide covers its stages.

The common pattern across states runs like this:

  • Education: a graduate degree, as UPPSC’s 2025 post details require.
  • Physical standards: the DSP post alone carries prescribed physical standards in the UPPSC list, unlike most desk posts in the same exam.
  • Stages: a preliminary exam, a main exam and an interview, with post allotment by merit and preference.
  • Preference sheet: candidates rank posts, so DSP goes to those who choose it and rank high enough.

The physical standard is the detail most aspirants miss. A candidate can clear the PCS merit list and still be ineligible for DSP if the standards aren’t met, so check them in the advertisement before listing DSP as a top preference.

Duties and Powers of a DSP

A DSP usually heads a police sub-division, supervising several police stations. In Uttar Pradesh this posting is called the Circle Officer (CO); in many other states it’s the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).

The core work includes:

  • supervising investigation and crime control across the circle’s police stations;
  • personally investigating serious cases that the law reserves for officers of DSP rank or above, such as offences under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act;
  • maintaining law and order at fairs, elections and protests in coordination with the SDM;
  • inspecting police stations and reviewing their records.

The pairing of CO and SDM at the sub-division level is one of the most visible working relationships in district administration. The Indian police ranks guide shows where the DSP sits between Inspector and Superintendent of Police.

Promotions: From DSP to IPS

The usual next rank is Additional Superintendent of Police. After that, State Police Service officers become eligible for induction into the IPS by promotion, through a selection process under the IPS (Appointment by Promotion) Regulations, 1955. Once inducted, they are IPS officers in every respect, including pay under the all-India rules.

Timelines vary widely by state and batch, because induction depends on vacancies in the state’s IPS promotion quota and the officer’s service record. Any coaching page that promises IPS in a fixed number of years is guessing.

DSP Compared With IPS and Sibling Posts

The table puts the DSP next to the posts it is most often confused with.

PostServiceEntry payRecruited through
InspectorState policeLevel 7Promotion from SI
DSP (UP)State Police ServiceLevel 10, ₹56,100UPPSC PCS
DSP (Bihar)Bihar Police ServiceLevel 9BPSC CCE
ASP (IPS)Indian Police ServiceLevel 10, ₹56,100UPSC Civil Services Exam
Deputy Collector (UP)State civil serviceLevel 10, ₹56,100UPPSC PCS

At entry, a UP DSP and a young IPS officer start at the same Level 10 basic pay. The difference shows up later: an IPS officer moves through senior scales faster and can serve across India and at the Centre. The IAS and IPS salary note covers that ladder, and the UPSC vs State PCS comparison weighs the two careers.

The 8th Pay Commission and DSPs

The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted by notification on 3 November 2025, chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, and was still holding consultations in October 2026. It revises central pay. A DSP is a state officer, so a revision reaches the DSP only when the state adopts a new matrix through its own order, which has usually come after the central decision.

For an aspirant weighing DSP, the money is close to an IPS officer’s at entry in a state like UP, and a level lower in Bihar. The real trade is scope and speed of growth, not the first payslip. If you want to police one state deeply, DSP is a strong choice; if you want the all-India ladder, the target is the IPS through UPSC.
