Patwari Salary: MP and Rajasthan Pay Levels, Probation Pay and Promotion

Patwari salary explained: Rajasthan L-5 and MP grade pay 2100 from official notices, probation pay rules, a labelled in-hand estimate and the route to Naib Tehsildar.

Patwari salary depends on the state, because the Patwari is a district-cadre revenue employee paid under state pay rules. Rajasthan places the post at Pay Level L-5, which starts at ₹20,800, while Madhya Pradesh still prints the old scale of ₹5,200 to ₹20,200 with a ₹2,100 grade pay in its 2026 recruitment rule book. Once probation ends, a reasonable in-hand estimate for a Patwari in either state is roughly ₹27,000 to ₹33,000 a month, but treat that as an estimate: probation pay rules, the state’s DA order and the posting town all move it.

The confusion most readers carry is that the advertised pay is what a new Patwari receives from the first month. In both states it isn’t. Rajasthan pays a fixed monthly remuneration during probation, and Madhya Pradesh governs the first three years by a separate 2019 order. This note gives the full-scale figures with their sources and keeps the probation rules apart from them.

Patwari Salary at a Glance

Every pay figure below comes from a recruiter’s own document. Where a state’s figure could not be traced to an official notice, the table says so.

Where the Pay Figures Come From

Each figure comes from the latest recruitment document, because the recruiter prints the pay the department has sanctioned.

Rajasthan. The Rajasthan Staff Selection Board’s Advertisement No. 02/2025, dated 20 February 2025, states that the Patwari is paid at Pay Matrix Level L-5 under the state’s seventh pay scale. Rajasthan runs its own matrix, and its L-5 column runs from ₹20,800 to ₹65,900. The same clause says that during probation the Patwari gets a fixed monthly remuneration set by state orders, so the L-5 basic starts only after probation.

Madhya Pradesh. The MP ESB rule book for the Group 2 Sub-group 4 Combined Recruitment Test 2026 describes the Patwari scale in pre-2016 terms: ₹5,200 to ₹20,200 plus ₹2,100 grade pay. Elsewhere in the same rule book, posts carrying that old scale are labelled Level 5, and Level 5 posts are listed at ₹22,100 to ₹70,000. That places the MP Patwari at Level 5 of the state matrix once the full scale applies. Many coaching tables quote ₹19,500 to ₹62,000 for the MP Patwari; in the rule book, that figure belongs to Level 4, the ₹1,900 grade pay.

The rule book adds one more condition. For the first three years after direct recruitment, pay follows General Administration Department letter C-3-13/2019/3/1 dated 12 December 2019, not the plain scale. The exact percentage in that order isn’t printed in the rule book, so it isn’t repeated here.

Allowances and Deductions

DA is the largest addition to basic pay once the full scale applies. The central government raised DA from 58% to 60% of basic from 1 January 2026, by an office memorandum dated 22 April 2026. States set their own DA by their own orders, so the 60% figure is a benchmark, not a promise for any one state.

These are the usual parts of a Patwari’s pay beyond basic:

  • Dearness Allowance: under the state’s current DA order.
  • House rent allowance: paid under the state’s own city classes; small in rural tehsils.
  • Other state allowances: any field or conveyance allowance the state notifies for revenue staff.
  • Deductions: the pension contribution under the state’s scheme, group insurance and, rarely at this level, income tax.

In-Hand Salary: A Worked Illustration

The table works one post-probation payslip on Rajasthan’s L-5 entry cell. It’s an estimate, not a salary slip: it assumes DA at 60% (the central rate, used here only as a benchmark), a 10% contributory pension deduction, no government housing and no income tax.

ComponentAmount
Basic pay, Level L-5₹20,800
DA at an assumed 60%₹12,480
Basic plus DA₹33,280
Pension contribution at 10% (assumed)minus ₹3,328
After the pension deduction₹29,952
HRA and other allowancesDepends on posting town
Estimated in-handAbout ₹27,000 to ₹33,000

The lower end allows for a lower state DA rate than the central benchmark. The upper end adds a small HRA. If a state’s pension scheme takes no employee contribution, the figure rises by the deduction amount. For an MP Patwari on Level 5, the same arithmetic on ₹22,100 gives a slightly higher number, but only after the three-year period under the 2019 order.

How to Become a Patwari

Both states now recruit graduates through a written test, not interviews.

Rajasthan. Only candidates declared qualified in RSSB’s Common Eligibility Test (Graduate Level) 2024 could apply. The advertisement first listed 2,020 posts; the Board of Revenue then raised the count to 3,705 (3,183 in non-scheduled areas and 522 in scheduled areas), and applications reopened from 23 to 29 June 2025. Selected candidates are appointed as probationer trainees by the District Collector and receive six months’ training under the land-revenue rules.

Madhya Pradesh. The 2026 rule book sets these conditions:

  • local resident of Madhya Pradesh and a citizen of India;
  • a graduate degree from a recognised university;
  • a CPCT score card with Hindi typing, or a pass within the three-year probation, failing which the appointment is cancelled;
  • age 18 to 45, counted on 1 January 2026, for MP residents.

The 2026 MP drive is a special recruitment of 200 Patwari posts for persons with disabilities. A general MP Patwari recruitment would carry its own post count in its own rule book.

The MPPSC and RPSC are different bodies; they recruit state-service officers such as the Deputy Collector, not Patwaris.

Duties of a Patwari

A Patwari keeps the village land records and verifies facts on the ground for the revenue administration. The records a citizen downloads from portals such as MP Bhulekh and Apna Khata Rajasthan begin with entries a Patwari maintains.

The usual work includes:

  • maintaining the khasra (plot register) and the record of rights for the village;
  • reporting on mutation when land is sold or inherited;
  • the crop inspection (girdawari) each season;
  • field reports for certificates and for relief after floods or drought;
  • helping collect land revenue and other government dues.

The national programme to digitise these records is explained in the note on land records management in India.

Promotions and Career Path

The first step up is usually Revenue Inspector, who supervises a group of Patwaris. Beyond that, Madhya Pradesh gives a clear route to Naib Tehsildar through a limited departmental exam.

MP ESB’s Naib Tehsildar rule book of 11 September 2026 sets the conditions for that exam:

  • at least five years’ service as a Patwari or Revenue Inspector (or in a revenue clerical post);
  • a graduate degree;
  • age not above 55 on 1 January 2026;
  • no more than three attempts.

The 2026 exam offers 27 posts from the Patwari and Revenue Inspector cadre, at Level 9, ₹36,200 to ₹1,14,800. That is the biggest pay jump available to a Patwari without leaving the department.

Patwari Compared With Sibling Posts

The comparison places the Patwari next to posts with similar or higher responsibilities in revenue administration.

The Lekhpal salary note covers the UP version of the job. The Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar pay note in this series covers the next rung up.

The 8th Pay Commission and Patwaris

The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted by notification on 3 November 2025 and, in October 2026, was still visiting states and taking memoranda, without a report. It revises central pay. A Patwari is a state employee, so any revision reaches the post only when the state adopts a new matrix by its own order. The 8th Pay Commission note tracks the timeline.

The judgment for a candidate is practical. The Patwari post pays modestly at entry and less during probation, but it is permanent, it sits at the base of revenue administration and, in Madhya Pradesh, it carries a written route to a Level 9 Naib Tehsildar post after five years of service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the patwari salary per month?

It depends on the state. Rajasthan pays Level L-5, starting at ₹20,800 basic, after a probation period on fixed remuneration. After probation, a reasonable in-hand estimate is roughly ₹27,000 to ₹33,000 a month, depending on the state’s DA and the posting town.

What is the MP patwari salary?

The MP ESB rule book for 2026 prints the scale as ₹5,200 to ₹20,200 plus ₹2,100 grade pay, which the same rule book places at Level 5, starting at ₹22,100. For the first three years, pay follows a GAD order dated 12 December 2019 rather than the full scale.

Patwari ki salary kitni hoti hai?

Rajasthan mein Patwari ka pay level L-5 hai, jiska shuruaati basic ₹20,800 hai. MP mein grade pay ₹2,100 wala scale hai, lekin pehle teen saal ka vetan 2019 ke ek GAD aadesh se tay hota hai. Probation ke baad in-hand lagbhag ₹27,000 se ₹33,000 tak ka anuman hai.

Does a patwari get full salary during probation?

Not in Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh. Rajasthan’s advertisement says a fixed monthly remuneration is paid during probation as per state orders. Madhya Pradesh ties the first three years’ pay to a 2019 General Administration Department order.

What is the qualification for the patwari post?

Both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh require a graduate degree. Rajasthan admits only candidates qualified in the CET (Graduate Level), and MP requires a CPCT score card with Hindi typing, or a pass within probation, and an age of 18 to 45.

How many patwari posts were advertised in Rajasthan in 2025?

RSSB first advertised 2,020 Patwari posts on 20 February 2025. The Board of Revenue then raised the total to 3,705, with 3,183 in non-scheduled areas and 522 in scheduled areas, and applications were reopened in June 2025.

What is the promotion after patwari?

The usual first step is Revenue Inspector. In Madhya Pradesh, a Patwari or Revenue Inspector with five years’ service and a degree can take a limited departmental exam for Naib Tehsildar, a Level 9 post.

Will the 8th Pay Commission raise patwari salary?

Only if the state adopts it. The 8th Central Pay Commission revises central pay and had not reported as of October 2026. A Patwari’s pay changes when the state government issues its own revised pay rules.
