Art and Culture is General Studies Paper I's opening section and the one candidates most often under-prepare. It covers architecture, sculpture, painting, music, dance, theatre, literature and the intangible heritage that carries them.
Questions here almost never ask what something is. They ask what it signifies — why a temple plan changed, what a dance form preserves, how a craft tradition survived. Preparing lists of styles is fast and scores badly; understanding the handful of transitions that shaped Indian art scores well and takes less time than it appears to.
