Mnemonics for UPSC: English and Hindi Tricks for Every GS Subject

Mnemonics for UPSC in English and Hindi across all eight GS subjects, with the method behind each trick, the cases where a trick hurts, and a printable PDF per subject.

Handwritten revision notes, a yellow sticky note and a highlighter on a study desk

You’ve read the Viceroys three times, and in the exam hall you still can’t say whether Lytton came before Ripon. The writs blur into each other. The Tropic of Cancer states come back as seven, or nine. And if you read in English but revise in Hindi, a trick learned in one language often doesn’t come back in the other. These mnemonics for UPSC exist for exactly that problem: long lists you keep mixing up, in two languages.

This guide gives you English and Hindi tricks for all eight GS subjects, each checked against the Constitution, NCERT or an official source, with a printable notes PDF per subject that you can test yourself from. Every trick decodes the same list in the same order in both languages, so it doesn’t matter which one you think in on exam day.

Be clear about what a mnemonic can’t do. It fixes recall of lists, orders and pairs. It doesn’t build understanding, and understanding is what Mains marks. A trick gets you the five writs in ten seconds; it won’t tell you who a mandamus can be issued against. Use these tricks for the recall, and the notes for the reasoning.

Why Mnemonics Work for UPSC Lists

A mnemonic works because it turns a long list you can’t hold into one short cue you can, and that cue rebuilds the list when you need it. UPSC lists are long, arbitrary and easy to confuse, which is the exact shape of material that memory handles badly on its own.

Three things are going on.

  • Chunking. Short-term memory holds only a handful of items at a time. George Miller’s 1956 paper put the span near seven; Nelson Cowan’s 2001 review argued it’s closer to four chunks. Either way, the 12 Schedules or the 16 Mahajanapadas, as loose items, won’t fit. Grouped into a few chunks, they do. The citizens-only Fundamental Rights, Articles 15, 16, 19, 29 and 30, stop being five numbers once you see three chunks: 15-16, then 19, then 29-30.
  • A cue that rebuilds the list. The mnemonic isn’t the knowledge. It’s the handle. “CLORPT” contains no soil science, but once you’ve learned what each letter stands for, the six letters are enough to pull all five soil-forming factors back out, in order, under pressure.
  • Sayability. A phrase you can say gets rehearsed by your inner voice, the part of working memory that Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch called the phonological loop. A string like “HMPCQ” can’t be said, so it can’t be rehearsed. “Go Right, My Child, Just Walk To Mizoram” can.

That last point decides most of the design choices in this guide.

A sayable sentence beats an efficient acronym almost every time.

Five Ways to Build Your Own UPSC Mnemonics

Every trick in this guide uses one of five methods, and you can build your own with the same five. Pick the method by the shape of the list: acronyms for short sets that happen to spell something, sentences for longer sequences, stories for chains, pegs for numbers, and the keyword method for foreign or technical terms.

MethodBest forUPSC example
Acronym3 to 6 items that spell a sayable wordSoil-forming factors (CLORPT)
Acrostic sentenceLonger sequences where order mattersTropic of Cancer states, west to east
Story chainDynasties, successions, movementsDelhi Sultanate dynasties
Number pegArticle numbers and datesEmergency Articles 352, 356, 360
Hindi-English keywordLatin, legal or technical termsThe five writs

1. Acronym: When the Letters Already Spell Something

An acronym takes the first letter of each item and joins them into one word. It works only when that word is short and pronounceable.

The soil-forming factors are the cleanest UPSC case. Soil scientist Hans Jenny’s 1941 model names five factors, and NCERT’s Class 11 physical geography book teaches the same five:

  • CLimate
  • Organisms (biological activity)
  • Relief (topography)
  • Parent material
  • Time

Say it “clor-pit.” Five factors, one syllable pair, and the order matches Jenny’s formula. See the soil profile note for what each factor does.

If the letters don’t spell anything sayable, don’t force an acronym. Write a sentence.

2. Acrostic Sentence: When Order Matters

An acrostic is a sentence whose words start with the letters you need, in order. Filler words are allowed, and that freedom is what makes long sequences sayable.

The Tropic of Cancer crosses eight Indian states. West to east, they are Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram. As an acronym that’s “GRMCJWTM,” which nobody can say. As a sentence:

Go Right, My Child, Just Walk To Mizoram.

Eight words, eight states, correct order, and the last word is the state itself, so there’s one less letter to decode. The count also becomes a check: if your sentence has seven words, you’ve dropped a state. The Tropic of Cancer note covers the latitude and the map work that goes with it.

3. Story Chain: When Each Item Hands Over to the Next

A story chain links each item to the next through one vivid scene. It suits successions, where the real question is “who came after whom.”

The five dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate are Mamluk (also called Slave, from 1206), Khalji (1290), Tughlaq (1320), Sayyid (1414) and Lodi (1451), ending with Babur’s victory at Panipat in 1526. Here’s the chain:

A Slave boy cooks khichdi. A tough wrestler snatches the pot. A Sayyid saint scolds him, and everyone ends up picnicking in Lodi Garden.

Slave, Khichdi for Khalji, Tough for Tughlaq, Sayyid, Lodi. The last image is a real anchor: Lodi Garden in Delhi holds the tomb of the Sayyid ruler Muhammad Shah and the tomb of Sikandar Lodi. The last two dynasties literally share the ground. A 2013 Prelims question hinged on when the Lodi dynasty fell and Babur took over, which is exactly the end of this chain.

4. Number Peg: When the Answer Is a Number

A number peg hangs facts on a pattern in the numbers themselves. Article numbers look random until you find the step between them.

The three emergencies are Article 352, Article 356 and Article 360. Start at 352 and add four, twice. Then notice that the scope shrinks as the number grows:

  • 352: National Emergency, the whole country or any part of it (war, external aggression or armed rebellion);
  • 356: President’s Rule, one state, when its constitutional machinery fails;
  • 360: Financial Emergency, the money, and it has never been proclaimed.

Nation, state, money. Plus four each time. Both halves of that peg have been tested: Prelims 2018 asked what follows a proclamation under Article 356, and Mains GS2 2018 asked when a Financial Emergency can be proclaimed. The emergency provisions note covers the procedure, and the text of the Constitution is on the Legislative Department’s site.

5. Hindi-English Keyword: Where Hindi Tricks Shine

The keyword method links an unfamiliar term to a familiar word that sounds like it, then ties that word to the meaning. Richard Atkinson and Michael Raugh tested it in 1975 on Russian vocabulary, and it’s still the standard tool for foreign-language terms.

UPSC is full of Latin and legal terms, and this is where gk tricks in Hindi beat English ones. An English speaker hears “quo warranto” as noise. A Hindi speaker hears a question:

  • Quo Warranto sounds like kyon, warrant? (क्यों, वारंट?): “Why are you in this office? Show your warrant.” That’s the writ: it asks a public office-holder by what authority they hold the post. See the quo warranto note.
  • Habeas Corpus sounds like haazir karo (हाज़िर करो): “Produce the body.” The court orders a detained person to be brought before it.
  • Certiorari sounds like certificate: the higher court calls for the lower court’s file and can quash its order. See the certiorari note.
  • Mandamus sounds like mandate: an order to a public official to do a duty they’ve skipped.
  • Prohibition means roko (रोको): stop a lower court from going beyond its jurisdiction while the case is still pending.

Five writs, five hooks, and each hook carries the meaning, not just the name. That matters, because Prelims 2024 asked what a writ of prohibition does, and knowing the name alone wouldn’t have answered it. The full set is in the types of writs note, and Hindi readers can use the quo warranto note in Hindi.

When a Mnemonic Hurts More Than It Helps

A mnemonic is a shortcut, and a shortcut to the wrong place is worse than no shortcut. Three situations turn a trick against you.

An outdated list trains a wrong answer. A generation of students learned “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.” The P is Pluto, which the International Astronomical Union reclassified as a dwarf planet in August 2006. Polity has the same trap. Old guides list seven Fundamental Rights, but the 44th Amendment (1978) removed the right to property from Part III and made it a legal right under Article 300A, so the list has been six ever since. See the 44th Amendment note. Any trick built on 29 states is also stale: since 2020 India has 28 states and 8 Union Territories. The worst part is that an old trick feels just as confident as a correct one. That’s why every changing list in this guide carries the date it was checked.

Two-item lists don’t need one. Writs are issued by the Supreme Court under Article 32 and by High Courts under Article 226. That’s two facts. Building a mnemonic for it adds a decoding step to something you could simply know. Save tricks for lists of three or more that you actually confuse.

A trick with no understanding behind it fails on statement questions. UPSC rarely asks you to list the five writs. It asks whether a statement about them is true. In 2022, Prelims asked whether mandamus lies against a private organisation, whether it lies against a government company, and who can seek quo warranto. The keyword hooks above give you the five names in seconds. They can’t tell you which bodies count as public. Only the note can.

The rule is simple. Learn the concept first, then use the mnemonic to hold the list in place.

A trick is scaffolding, not the building.

Polity and Constitution Mnemonics

Polity questions in Prelims from 2013 to 2026 keep coming back to the same lists: which right sits in which group, which Schedule holds what, which House has a power the other lacks, and which body has an article behind it. Mains then asks you to use those lists in argument, on Article 356, the Financial Emergency, the Rajya Sabha and the ethics of public office. The tricks below cover the lists where a one-word slip costs the mark.

Rights, directives and duties

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Fundamental Rights: the six groups (Articles 14-32)
The count is six, not seven: Article 31 on property now reads Omitted. Untouchability (Article 17) sits under Equality, which is exactly what the 2020 question tested.
Every Free Engineer Reads Code Carefully
Hindi: समान स्वर में शोषण रोको, धर्म संस्कृति का उपचार करो
E Right to Equality (Articles 14-18)
F Right to Freedom (Articles 19-22)
E Right against Exploitation (Articles 23-24)
R Right to Freedom of Religion (Articles 25-28)
C Cultural and Educational Rights (Articles 29-30)
C Right to Constitutional Remedies (Article 32)
Fundamental Rights available only to citizens (Articles 15, 16, 19, 29, 30)
Rights such as Articles 14, 20, 21 and 25 protect every person, foreigners included, though enemy aliens lose Article 22’s arrest safeguards and Article 18(2) binds only citizens. Article 30 says all minorities, not citizens, but standard texts read minorities as sections of citizens and count it here.
15-16 a pair, 19 alone, 29-30 a pair: citizens only
Hindi: 15-16 की जोड़ी, बीच में अकेला 19, फिर 29-30 की जोड़ी: बस नागरिकों के
15 Article 15: no discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth
16 Article 16: equality of opportunity in public employment
19 Article 19: the six freedoms
29 Article 29: protection of the language, script and culture of any section of citizens
30 Article 30: minorities’ right to set up and run educational institutions
Article 19(1): the six freedoms
Clause (f), the right to property, is gone, so the list jumps from (e) to (g). Co-operative societies in clause (c) came in 2011 through the 97th Amendment.
Students Always Argue More, Rarely Pause
Hindi: बोलो, सभा में संघ बनाओ, घूमो, बसो, पेशा चुनो
S (a) Speech and expression
A (b) Assemble peaceably and without arms
A (c) Form associations, unions or co-operative societies
M (d) Move freely throughout India
R (e) Reside and settle anywhere in India
P (g) Practise any profession, occupation, trade or business
The five writs (Articles 32 and 226)
Article 32(2) names them in this exact order. Prohibition acts during a pending case and certiorari can also undo an order already made; mandamus lies against a private body only when it carries a public duty.
Honest Men Prefer Quiet Courts
Hindi: बंदी पर प्रतिबंध, अब उठाओ
H Habeas corpus: produce the detained person before the court
M Mandamus: a public authority must do its legal duty
P Prohibition: a higher court stops a lower court or tribunal while the case is pending
Q Quo warranto: by what authority do you hold this public office?
C Certiorari: a higher court quashes an order already passed, or takes up the case
Directive Principles added or rewritten by the 42nd Amendment (1976)
Article 43B on co-operative societies looks like a 1976 addition but came in 2011 through the 97th Amendment. Equal pay for equal work was already in the original Article 39, which is the distractor in the 2017 question.
In 1976 the Kids got a childhood, the poor got a Lawyer, the Workers got a seat, and the Woods got a guard
Hindi: 1976 का तोहफा: बच्चे को बचपन, गरीब को वकील, मजदूर को कुर्सी, जंगल को पहरा
Kids Article 39(f): children to grow up in freedom and dignity (clause rewritten)
Lawyer Article 39A: equal justice and free legal aid
Workers Article 43A: workers’ participation in management of industries
Woods Article 48A: protect the environment and safeguard forests and wild life
Fundamental Duties: the 11 duties of Article 51A
Ten duties came with the 42nd Amendment in 1976 and clause (k) with the 86th in 2002. The 2017 statement “A legislative process has been provided to enforce these duties” was false: Article 51A provides none, and the duties aren’t correlative to legal duties.
Constitution’s Ideals Unite; Defend Harmony, Heritage, Environment; Science Protects Excellent Kids
Hindi: सं-आ-ए-र / भा-वि-प / वै-सा-उ-शि
C (a) Abide by the Constitution; respect the National Flag and National Anthem
I (b) Follow the noble ideals of the freedom struggle
U (c) Uphold the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India
D (d) Defend the country and render national service when called
H (e) Promote harmony and brotherhood; renounce practices against women’s dignity
H (f) Value and preserve the heritage of our composite culture
E (g) Protect the natural environment and have compassion for living creatures
S (h) Develop scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry
P (i) Safeguard public property and abjure violence
E (j) Strive towards excellence in every sphere
K (k) Parents or guardians provide opportunities for education to their child or ward aged 6 to 14

Structure of the Constitution

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
The 12 Schedules of the Constitution
UPSC asks the Schedule by its content: anti-defection is Tenth (2014), and tribal land in Scheduled Areas is Fifth (2019). Keep Fifth and Sixth apart: Sixth covers only the four north-eastern States.
TEARS OF OLD PM
Hindi: रा-वे-श-रा / अ-ज-सू-भा / भू-द-पं-न
T First: Territory, the States and Union territories
E Second: Emoluments of the President, Governors, presiding officers, judges and the CAG
A Third: Affirmations, the forms of oaths
R Fourth: Rajya Sabha seats for each State and Union territory
S Fifth: Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes
O Sixth: Other tribal areas, in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram
F Seventh: Federal lists, Union, State and Concurrent
O Eighth: Our 22 languages (the Schedule is titled Languages, not official languages)
L Ninth: Land-reform and other laws validated, added in 1951
D Tenth: Defection, added in 1985
P Eleventh: Panchayats, their powers and responsibilities
M Twelfth: Municipalities, their powers and responsibilities
Borrowed features: five constitutions and what India adapted from each
This card follows the NCERT box exactly. Other books add more countries; if a question pairs a feature with a country not listed here, check it against a primary source before trusting a coaching table.
Britain’s Speaker, America’s Rights, Ireland’s Directives, France’s Fraternity, Canada’s Centre
Hindi: ब्रिटेन का स्पीकर, अमेरिका के अधिकार, आयरलैंड के निदेशक तत्व, फ्रांस का भाईचारा, कनाडा का केंद्र
Britain British: first past the post, parliamentary government, rule of law, the Speaker, law-making procedure
America United States: charter of Fundamental Rights, judicial review, independent judiciary
Ireland Irish: Directive Principles of State Policy
France French: liberty, equality and fraternity
Canada Canadian: quasi-federal government with a strong Centre, residual powers
Preamble: the five words describing India, in order
The 42nd Amendment changed Sovereign Democratic Republic to this five-word form and made unity into unity and integrity of the Nation. Mains 2016 asked you to defend each adjective, so learn the order before the meanings.
Some Students Sing During Recess
Hindi: संत समाज पंडाल में लोगों को गाना सुनाए
S Sovereign
S Socialist (added in 1976)
S Secular (added in 1976)
D Democratic
R Republic
The three emergencies: Articles 352, 356 and 360
All three sit in Part XVIII. Under Article 356 the State Assembly isn’t dissolved automatically; its law-making powers pass to Parliament, which is the 2018 Prelims answer.
352 war, 356 State, 360 money: step up by four each time
Hindi: 352 युद्ध, 356 राज्य, 360 पैसा: हर बार चार आगे
352 Article 352: National Emergency, for war, external aggression or armed rebellion
356 Article 356: failure of constitutional machinery in a State (President’s Rule)
360 Article 360: Financial Emergency
Subjects moved from the State List to the Concurrent List by the 42nd Amendment (1976)
The same Amendment also inserted entry 20A, population control and family planning, but that was a new entry, not a transfer. If a question says added to the Concurrent List, count six; if it says moved from the State List, count five.
Every Forest Wants Wise Administration
Hindi: शिक्षक वन में वन्य जीवों का नाप-तौल न्याय से करें
E Education (Concurrent entry 25)
F Forests (entry 17A)
W Protection of wild animals and birds (entry 17B)
W Weights and measures, except establishing standards (entry 33A)
A Administration of justice, courts except the Supreme Court and High Courts (entry 11A)
Landmark Constitutional Amendments by number
The 1st Amendment is widely seen as a reply to court rulings on Fundamental Rights, the 2023 answer. For the 106th, Article 334A is the trap: seats are reserved only after the first census taken after commencement and a fresh delimitation, and then for 15 years; the 131st Amendment Bill, 2026, which sought delimitation on the 2011 census, was negatived in the Lok Sabha on 17 April 2026.
1 shields, 42 rewrites, 44 repairs, 52 stops defectors, 61 lowers the vote, 73-74 go local, 86 sends kids to school, 101 taxes once, 103 adds EWS, 106 seats women

1 Amendment 1 (1951): Ninth Schedule, to shield land-reform laws
42 Amendment 42 (1976): Fundamental Duties; socialist, secular and integrity in the Preamble
44 Amendment 44 (1978): property out of Fundamental Rights; armed rebellion replaces internal disturbance in Article 352
52 Amendment 52 (1985): Tenth Schedule, anti-defection
61 Amendment 61 (1988): voting age cut from 21 to 18 (Article 326)
73 Amendments 73 and 74 (1992): Panchayats (Part IX) and Municipalities (Part IXA)
86 Amendment 86 (2002): Article 21A, free and compulsory education for ages 6 to 14
101 Amendment 101 (2016): GST, Articles 246A and 279A
103 Amendment 103 (2019): up to 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections
106 Amendment 106 (2023): one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha (Article 330A), State Assemblies (Article 332A) and the Delhi Assembly (Article 239AA)
Amendments that also need ratification by half the States (Article 368(2) proviso)
The Governor’s office isn’t on the list, which is the trap in the 2025 question. These amendments need a special majority in each House plus resolutions from at least half the State legislatures.
Please Explain: Judges Like Getting Real Answers

R Representation of States in Parliament
A Article 368 itself
Preamble: the five liberties
Justice in the Preamble is social, economic and political, but Liberty has no economic form, which is the 2017 answer. Economic justice appears in both the Preamble and the Directive Principles, the 2013 answer.

Parliament and the President

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Special powers of the Rajya Sabha
In 2020 UPSC offered creating All India Services as a power the Houses share; it’s the Rajya Sabha’s alone, and amending the Constitution is the equal power. The 2016 question turned on the two-thirds present and voting figure in Article 249.
Seniors Always Vote Early
Hindi: राज्यसभा अफसर उठाए आज
S Article 249: lets Parliament legislate on a State List subject in the national interest; resolution by two-thirds present and voting, valid up to 1 year at a time
A Article 312: creates new All India Services by the same two-thirds resolution
V Article 67(b): a resolution to remove the Vice-President starts in the Rajya Sabha; the Lok Sabha only agrees
E Emergency approval while the Lok Sabha is dissolved: a Rajya Sabha resolution keeps the proclamation alive until 30 days after the new Lok Sabha first sits (provisos to Articles 352(4), 356(3), 360(2))
Powers only the Lok Sabha holds
Approving an Emergency needs both Houses; only disapproving it is the Lok Sabha’s alone, which is the trap in the 2022 question. The words no-confidence motion don’t appear in the Constitution; the power flows from Article 75(3).
Money Grants Confidence, Evidently
Hindi: धनी अनुज अविनाश आया
M Money Bills: introduced only in the Lok Sabha; the Rajya Sabha can only recommend within 14 days (Article 109)
G Demands for grants: voted only by the Lok Sabha (Article 113)
C No-confidence: the Council of Ministers is collectively responsible to the Lok Sabha (Article 75(3))
E Emergency disapproval: a Lok Sabha resolution forces the President to revoke a National Emergency (Article 352(7))
Joint sitting: the three triggers (Article 108)
A joint sitting decides by a majority of members of both Houses present and voting, the 2015 answer. It’s barred for Money Bills, and a Constitution Amendment Bill must pass each House separately under Article 368.
Rejected, Disagreed, or 6 months of silence: call a joint sitting
Hindi: ना, झगड़ा, या 6 महीने की चुप्पी: फिर संयुक्त बैठक
Rejected The other House rejects the Bill
Disagreed The Houses finally disagree on amendments
6 More than 6 months pass without the other House passing it
Who elects the President (Article 54)
Nominated members and Legislative Council members never vote, which settles the 2013 and 2023 statements. The Explanation to Article 54 names only Delhi and Puducherry among Union territories.
Only the Elected vote: Lok, Rajya, State Assemblies, then Delhi and Puducherry
Hindi: सिर्फ चुने हुए: लोक, राज्य, विधानसभा, दिल्ली, पुडुचेरी
Lok Elected members of the Lok Sabha
Rajya Elected members of the Rajya Sabha
State Elected members of the State Legislative Assemblies
Delhi Elected members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly
Puducherry Elected members of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly
The President’s three vetoes (Article 111)
None of the three applies to a Constitution Amendment Bill: Article 368(2) says the President shall give assent. Money Bills can’t be returned, so only the absolute veto is even possible there.
No, Not yet, Silence
Hindi: ना, अभी नहीं, चुप्पी
No Absolute veto: the President withholds assent and the Bill dies
Not yet Suspensive veto: a non-Money Bill goes back once for reconsideration; if passed again, assent is compulsory
Silence Pocket veto: the President sits on the Bill, since Article 111 sets no time limit

Constitutional and statutory bodies

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Constitutional bodies and their articles
A body is constitutional only if an article creates it. NCBC moved from statutory to constitutional in 2018, which Mains asked about in 2022.
76 advises, 148 audits, 279A taxes together, 280 shares, 315 selects, 324 elects, 338 protects, 350B speaks

76 Article 76: Attorney General for India
148 Article 148: Comptroller and Auditor General
279A Article 279A: GST Council, added in 2016
280 Article 280: Finance Commission, set up every fifth year, or earlier
315 Article 315: UPSC and the State Public Service Commissions
324 Article 324: Election Commission
338 Articles 338, 338A, 338B: National Commissions for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes (NCBC since 2018)
350B Article 350B: Special Officer for Linguistic Minorities
Statutory, not constitutional: three watchdogs and their Acts
In the 2023 question only NCBC has an article (338B); NHRC, the Law Commission and the NCDRC have none. When a name says National Commission, check for an article before calling it constitutional.
Rights in 93, Information in 05, Green in 10: all born of Acts, not the Constitution
Hindi: अधिकार 93 में, सूचना 05 में, हरियाली 10 में: तीनों कानून से बने, संविधान से नहीं

Information Central Information Commission: Right to Information Act, 2005
Green National Green Tribunal: National Green Tribunal Act, 2010

Governance and ethics

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
The seven Nolan principles of public life
The UK list runs Selflessness, Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Honesty, Leadership; LOHASIO reorders it for recall, so don’t quote it as the official order. GS4 answers on a code of ethics use these seven as a ready model.
LOHASIO
Hindi: नेता खुलकर ईमान से जवाब दे, निस्वार्थ सच्चा वस्तुनिष्ठ बने
L Leadership

Ancient and Medieval History Mnemonics

Early history questions in Prelims mostly test pairings: a site with its find, an edict with its state, a king with his dynasty, a saint with his region. The Prelims file has ancient or medieval questions in every year from 2013 to 2026, and Mains keeps returning to the Harappans, the Cholas, Vijayanagara and the Bhakti poets. These tricks hold the lists and orders behind those questions; the note linked with each one carries the context.

UPSC Mnemonics: Ancient and Medieval History (English + Hindi)

application/pdf · 1.1 MB · Sep 15, 2026

23 memory tricks for Ancient and Medieval History, in English and Hindi. Each one gives what it decodes to, the common trap and its source. With a cover-the-answer self-test grid and blank cards for your own tricks. Printable A4.

Harappans and early faiths

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Harappan sites and what was found there
Prelims mixes real sites with outsiders: the 2019 options put Sohgaura beside Chanhudaro, Kot Diji and Desalpur. Kalibangan’s ploughed field belongs to the Early Harappan level, a detail statement questions like.
Mohan bathes, Kali plows, Lothar drills beads, Dholu stores water, Chanu crafts shells, Bano molds a clay plow, Shorty fetches lapis.
Hindi: मोहन नहाए, काली हल चलाए, लोथू मनके छेदे, धोलू पानी भरे, चन्हू सीप काटे, बनो हल गढ़े, शोर्तू लाजवर्द लाए।
Mohan Mohenjodaro: the Great Bath and the warehouse on the Citadel
Kali Kalibangan (Rajasthan): a ploughed field from Early Harappan levels, and fire altars
Loth Lothal (Gujarat): bead-making drills and fire altars, close to carnelian sources
Dhol Dholavira (Gujarat): water reservoirs with masonry, and a signboard of Harappan signs
Chanu Chanhudaro: a tiny craft town (under 7 hectares) making beads, cut shell, metal goods, seals and weights
Bano Banawali (Haryana): terracotta models of the plough
Short Shortughai (Afghanistan): settled near the best lapis lazuli source; traces of canals
The five major Harappan cities
NCERT’s current edition names Rakhigarhi, not Mohenjodaro, as the biggest Harappan city. Two of the five are in India, so a question on Indian sites wants Rakhigarhi and Dholavira.
Rich Men Have Deep Gardens
Hindi: राखी मोहन को हरी धोती में गाँव ले गई
R Rakhigarhi (Hisar, Haryana): the biggest Harappan city, about 550 hectares
M Mohenjodaro (Sind, Pakistan)
H Harappa (Punjab, Pakistan), on the Ravi
D Dholavira (Kutch, Gujarat)
G Ganweriwala (Cholistan, Pakistan)
The six schools of Indian philosophy and their authors
The 2014 question hid Lokayata and Kapalika among real pairs; neither is one of the six. The six are the schools that draw on the Vedas, written in short sutra style.
Judge Gautam, atom-counter Kanada, list-maker Kapila, bendy Patanjali, ritual-keeper Jaimini and Badarayana at the Veda’s end.
Hindi: गौतम तर्क करे, कणाद कण गिने, कपिल गिनती करे, पतंजलि योग करे, जैमिनि यज्ञ करे, बादरायण वेद का अंत पढ़े।

Kapil Sankhya: Kapila
Patanjali Yoga: Patanjali
Jaimini Purva Mimamsa: Jaimini
Badarayan Uttara Mimamsa (Vedanta): Badarayana
The five vows of Jaina monks and nuns
Jaina monks and nuns took all five; NCERT pairs them with the idea that even stones and water have souls. That second idea is what the 2023 question quoted.
All Saints Avoid Bad Acts
Hindi: अच्छे संत अक्सर बुराई से अलग रहते हैं
A Ahimsa: not killing
S Satya: not lying
A Asteya: not stealing
B Brahmacharya: celibacy
A Aparigraha: not possessing property
The four places of the Buddha’s life
The order follows his life, so it doubles as a sequence. The usual slip is sending the nibbana to Sarnath; Sarnath is the first sermon, Kusinagara the end.
Little Buddha Sits Kindly
Hindi: लाला बोले सच्ची कथा
L Lumbini: birth
B Bodh Gaya: enlightenment
S Sarnath: first sermon
K Kusinagara (Kushinagar): nibbana
Early Buddhist symbols and the events they stand for
Early sculptors showed the Buddha through symbols, not in human form. NCERT reads the empty seat as his meditation, which is the 2026 question; the wheel is the sermon and the stupa the death.
Under the tree he woke, on the seat he sat still, with the wheel he taught, in the stupa he rests.
Hindi: पेड़ तले जागे, आसन पर ध्यान, चक्र से उपदेश, स्तूप में निर्वाण।
tree Bodhi tree: the enlightenment
seat Empty seat: the meditation of the Buddha
wheel Wheel: the first sermon at Sarnath
stupa Stupa: the mahaparinibbana

Kind Gods Keep Many Sweets, Puppies Keep Mangoes, Very Kind Vets Can Always Assist My Aunt

Mahajanapadas and their capitals
Rajagriha means house of the king, which is the hook in the story. Sources disagree on when Magadha moved its capital to Pataliputra: NCERT’s main text says the 4th century BCE, while Britannica credits Udayin in the 5th, as does a sidebar in the same NCERT chapter.
A champ from Anga visits the raja’s house in Magadha, votes at Vaishali with the Vajjis, hears stories at Shravasti in Kosala, bathes at Varanasi in Kashi, sells calves at Kaushambi in Vatsa, watches stars at Ujjayini in Avanti and ends at Mathura with the Shurasenas.

Shah and Man stay in Pakistan, Kalsi climbs into Uttarakhand, Girnar guards Gujarat, Dhauli and Jaugada dance in Odisha, Erragudi rests in Andhra.

Foreign visitors and the rulers they saw
UPSC pairs the visitor with the ruler of his day, so learn the court, not just the century. Paes and Nuniz both wrote on Vijayanagara, and both have turned up in recent papers.
Mega met Chandragupta, Biruni was hauled to Ghazni, Battuta joined bin Tughlaq, Razzaq gaped at Vijayanagara, Paes praised Krishnadeva Raya, Bernier doctored Dara.

South India and the regional kingdoms

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Sangam dynasties: emblem, capital and port
Senguttuvan is the Chera king of the Silappadikaram who ruled from Karur, so mark him Chera; one NCERT Class 12 caption calls him a Pandya chief, and that caption is the outlier. Rajendra I’s copper-plate seal shows the Chola tiger between the Pandya fish and a bow, all three emblems at once.
Cheras have bows, Cholas have tigers, Pandyas have fish.

The tripartite struggle for Kanauj

P Gurjara-Pratiharas: Gujarat and Rajasthan
R Rashtrakutas: western Deccan; Dantidurga broke from his Chalukya overlord in the mid-8th century

The Chola rise: three rulers in order
Keep the two big temples apart: the Thanjavur temple is Rajaraja’s, Gangaikondacholapuram is Rajendra’s. Rajendra took the titles Gangai Konda Chola and Kadaram Kondan for victories in north India and Southeast Asia, which is the hook for the 2025 question on the Srivijaya campaign.
Vijayalaya takes the delta, Rajaraja crowns Thanjavur, Rajendra builds Gangaikondacholapuram.

Vijayanagara’s four dynasties in order (1336 onward)
Sources differ on the middle dates: NCERT gives the Saluvas till 1503 and the Aravidu by 1542, while Pudukkottai’s official district history gives Saluva rule as 1485 to 1505 and Tuluva as 1505 to 1570. The order is the same in both, and the dates here follow NCERT.
Some Soldiers Take Arms

L Lodis: ended when Babur beat Ibrahim Lodi at Panipat in 1526
The great Mughals in order, Babur to Aurangzeb (1526 to 1707)
Sher Shah Suri is not a Mughal; his Sur rule (1540 to 1555) sits inside Humayun’s reign. UPSC tends to ask which emperor did what, as with Jahangir’s shift to albums and portraits in 2019.
Babur’s Horse Always Jumps Showing Attitude
Hindi: बाबा हुए अमीर, जमा शाही औलाद
B Babur: won the First Battle of Panipat in 1526; died 1530

Bhakti, Sikhs and Marathas

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Bhakti saints and their regions
UPSC often asks who was active when, as the 2013 question on the Lodi fall did, so pair each saint with a century too. NCERT’s timeline also places Raidas, Surdas and Tulsidas in Uttar Pradesh.
Basava speaks Kannada in Karnataka, Jnana marches through Maharashtra, Kabir weaves in Uttar Pradesh, Nanak prays in Punjab, Sankardev sails to Assam, Vallabha goes to Gujarat, Chaitanya chants in Bengal and Mira rides to Rajasthan.

Three southern devotional traditions
Lingayats questioned rebirth and rejected caste hierarchy, which is what the 2016 statement tested. Don’t swap the anthologies: Divyaprabandham is Vaishnava, Tevaram is Shaiva.
Alvars carry a V for Vishnu, Nayanars nod to Shiva, Lingayats wear the linga.
Hindi: आलवार विष्णु के, नयनार शिव के, लिंगायत गले में लिंग पहनें।

The ten Sikh Gurus in order (1469 to 1708)

Modern Indian History and the Freedom Struggle Mnemonics

Modern history is where UPSC tests order and pairing hardest. Between 2015 and 2024, Prelims asked 8 questions on the Charter Acts and the Government of India Acts alone, and from 2013 to 2025 it asked at least 12 on the Gandhian phase, from Champaran to the Poona Pact. These tricks cover the rulers, the Acts, the Congress sessions, the movements and the reformers in the order they came.

Company to Crown: rulers and Acts

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Governors-General: the six who get asked, 1772-1856
Two Hastings sit in this list: Warren is first, the Marquess of Hastings fourth. Britannica’s years shift by article for Wellesley (appointed 1797) and Dalhousie (1847 or 1848), so lock the order first and the years second.
Hungry Cats Wait, Hungry Bears Dine

M Lord Mountbatten (March-August 1947): last Viceroy; partition plan
Company-era Acts in order, 1773-1853
The 20-year rhythm holds only for the Charter Acts. The two traps: 1813 ended the Indian trade monopoly but kept tea, and 1833 is the Act that made the Governor-General of Bengal the Governor-General of India.
Regulate, then Pitt, then a Charter every 20 years: 93, 13, 33, 53

Crown-era Acts in order, 1858-1947
Dyarchy arrives in the provinces in 1919, and the 1935 Act ends it there with provincial autonomy. Don’t write that the 1935 federation ran: it was never put into effect.

Anglo-Mysore Wars and how each ended, 1767-1799
Hyder Ali started the second war but died in December 1782, so the Treaty of Mangalore was made with Tipu. Cornwallis fought the third war and Wellesley the fourth.
Madras, Mangalore, then Seringapatam twice: first half the kingdom, then Tipu himself
Hindi: मद्रास, मंगलौर, फिर दो बार श्रीरंगपट्टनम: पहले आधा राज, फिर टीपू की जान

Mangalore Second war (1780-84): Treaty of Mangalore with Tipu, 1784
Seringapatam Third war (1790-92): under Cornwallis; Tipu cedes half his lands after Seringapatam, 1792
Tipu Fourth war (1799): under Wellesley; Seringapatam stormed, Tipu killed
Doctrine of Lapse: states annexed under Dalhousie, 1848-1854
Awadh (1856) is the trap: it was annexed outright, not under lapse. The 1852 case was the small Udaipur state in present-day Chhattisgarh; some sources, Britannica among them, print ‘Chota Udaipur’, but it isn’t Chhota Udepur in Gujarat or Mewar’s Udaipur. Jhansi’s raja died in November 1853 and the annexation was proclaimed in March 1854, so 1854 may appear in options.

Land revenue systems: who, where and when
The 2017 paper asked who brought in Ryotwari: Read and Munro, not Cornwallis. Cornwallis belongs only to the Permanent Settlement.
Bengal’s zamindar is Permanent, Madras’s ryot answers to Munro, the North’s Mahal to Mackenzie
Hindi: बंगाल का जमींदार स्थायी, मद्रास का रैयत मुनरो का, उत्तर का महाल मैकेंजी का
Permanent Permanent Settlement (1793): Lord Cornwallis; revenue fixed with the zamindars of Bengal
ryot Ryotwari: tried by Alexander Read, developed by Thomas Munro; settled directly with the cultivator across south India
Mahal Mahalwari (1822): Holt Mackenzie; settled village by village in the North Western Provinces
1857: centres and their leaders
The revolt began at Meerut on May 10, 1857, and the sepoys reached Delhi the next day. Tantia Tope led no centre of his own at the start: he was Nana Sahib’s commander and later fought beside the Rani near Gwalior.
The emperor sat in Delhi, Nana ran Kanpur, the Begum held Lucknow, the Rani rode from Jhansi, Kunwar fought in Bihar, and the Maulvi preached in Faizabad.

Indian Economy Mnemonics

Economy lists get asked as “which of the following” sets: which tools an expansionary RBI would use, which items sit in forex reserves, which crops get MSP, which criteria a Finance Commission used. Between 2013 and 2026, Prelims named the Finance Commission in 7 questions and MSP in 6, and Mains has asked for the taxes GST subsumed. Several lists here changed recently, so learn the current version.

Money, banking and the RBI

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
RBI’s 7 main policy rates, ratios and OMOs
An expansionary RBI cuts the rates and ratios and buys securities; it never raises the MSF rate, which is the trap in the 2020 question. The fixed-rate reverse repo (now used only at the RBI’s discretion) and the Market Stabilisation Scheme also exist but aren’t encoded here.
Cool Students Revise Smartly, Master Basics Often
Hindi: नानी साथ रेल सफर सीधे बैंक खुलते ही पहुँचीं
C Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR): cash kept with the RBI as a share of net demand and time liabilities
S Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR): government securities, cash and gold banks must hold
R Repo rate: the rate at which the RBI lends to banks under the LAF
S Standing Deposit Facility (SDF): the rate at which the RBI absorbs overnight deposits
M Marginal Standing Facility (MSF): the penal overnight borrowing window for banks
B Bank Rate: the rate for rediscounting bills, aligned with the MSF rate
O Open Market Operations (OMO): outright purchase or sale of government securities
The LAF corridor, floor to ceiling
The SDF, not the fixed-rate reverse repo, now forms the floor. The MSF lets a bank borrow overnight against its SLR holdings at a penal rate.
Stand, Rest, Mount
Hindi: जमा करो, रेपो लो, सीमा पार तो जुर्माना
S Floor: Standing Deposit Facility rate, 25 basis points below repo
R Middle: the policy repo rate set by the MPC
M Ceiling: MSF rate and Bank Rate, 25 basis points above repo

National income, indicators and planning

From GDP to National Income
“National” adds income from abroad, “Net” drops depreciation, and “factor cost” removes net indirect taxes. Change one word, change one step.
Start at GDP: Add Abroad, Drop Depreciation, Take off Taxes
Hindi: GDP में विदेश जोड़ो, घिसाई घटाओ, टैक्स हटाओ
GDP GDP at market prices: final output produced within the country
Abroad GNP = GDP + net factor income from abroad
Depreciation NNP = GNP – depreciation
Taxes National Income = NNP at factor cost = NNP at market prices – (indirect taxes – subsidies)
The 3 methods of measuring national income
All three measure the same circular flow, so in principle they give the same GDP. In the expenditure method, imports are subtracted.
Please Explain It

E Expenditure method: C + I + G + (X – M)
I Income method: sum of factor incomes (wages, rent, interest, profit)
Index of Core Industries (base 2022-23): 9 industries by weight
The old “eight core industries” trick is outdated: the 2022-23 series, first released in July 2026, adds iron ore and puts electricity, not refinery products, at the top. (List as of 2026-09-15.)

Budget, taxes and fiscal federalism

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Budget receipts: revenue vs capital
Capital receipts either create a liability or reduce assets. Interest the government receives is a revenue receipt and creates no liability (2025).

T Revenue receipt: tax revenue
N Revenue receipt: non-tax revenue (interest, dividends, fees)
R Capital receipt: recovery of loans
D Capital receipt: other receipts, mainly PSU disinvestment
B Capital receipt: borrowings and other liabilities
The 3 deficit formulas
Non-debt receipts are already inside the fiscal deficit, so the primary deficit only subtracts interest: in the 2025 sum, 50,000 minus 1,500 gives 48,500 crore.
Rich Folks Pay
Hindi: राजस्व से राजकोषीय, फिर प्राथमिक: ब्याज हटाओ

Environment and Ecology Mnemonics

Environment questions lean hard on lists: which gases count, which protocol sits under which treaty, which category comes first. Prelims keeps returning to IUCN and CITES status, treaty pairings, AQI pollutants and protected areas, with Madhav National Park and the western hoolock gibbon both asked in 2026. Mains now asks for framework goals by name: the Sendai targets in 2024 and the Kunming-Montreal goals in 2026.

Species and protected areas

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
IUCN Red List: the nine categories in order
Only CR, EN and VU count as threatened; Near Threatened is a warning, not a threatened category. The 2026 paper tested a species’ status directly: the western hoolock gibbon is Endangered.
Every Wild Cat Eats Very Nice Little Deer Nightly
Hindi: विजय जंगल में गंगा संग सुबह निकला, कल आँधी मूसलाधार
E Extinct (EX)
W Extinct in the Wild (EW): survives only in cultivation, in captivity or as a naturalized population
C Critically Endangered (CR)
E Endangered (EN)
V Vulnerable (VU)
N Near Threatened (NT)
L Least Concern (LC)
D Data Deficient (DD)
N Not Evaluated (NE)
CITES: what Appendices I, II and III mean
CITES regulates trade, not habitat, and it’s a treaty between governments. The 2015 paper tested it alongside IUCN.
One: only in exceptional cases. Two: trade with permits. Three: one country asks for help.
Hindi: एक: एकदम खास हालात में ही. दो: परमिट से व्यापार. तीन: कोई एक देश मदद माँगे.
One Appendix I: species threatened with extinction; trade allowed only in exceptional circumstances
Two Appendix II: not necessarily threatened now, but trade is strictly regulated so they don’t become so
Three Appendix III: species one Party regulates at home and asks other Parties to help control trade
Wild Life (Protection) Act 1972: the four schedules after the 2022 amendment
Before the 2022 amendment the Act had six schedules, with plants in Schedule VI and a separate vermin schedule, now removed. Vermin can still be notified under Section 62. The 2020 question on Schedule VI plants used the old layout.
Top, Lower, Plants, Passports
Hindi: ऊँचा, नीचा, पौधा, परमिट
T Schedule I: animals given the highest protection
L Schedule II: animals given a lesser degree of protection
P Schedule III: protected plants
P Schedule IV: specimens listed in the CITES Appendices
Protected areas under the Wild Life (Protection) Act: the four categories
Biosphere reserves and eco-sensitive zones aren’t among these four, so a statement that eco-sensitive zones are declared under the Wild Life Act is false. That was the 2014 trap.
National Sanctuaries Conserve Communities

N National Park
S Wildlife Sanctuary
C Conservation Reserve
C Community Reserve
Biosphere reserve zones, from the inside out

Treaties and frameworks

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
The three Rio conventions and what each covers
All three bear on biodiversity, which is why their secretariats work through a Joint Liaison Group. The 2014 paper asked whether UNCCD bears on biodiversity (it does).
Cool Blue Dunes
Hindi: जल-जैव-मरु
C UNFCCC: climate change
B CBD: biological diversity
D UNCCD: desertification and drought
Protocols and their parent treaties
Annex I countries belong to UNFCCC and Kyoto, not Cartagena; the 2016 paper paired them wrongly on purpose. Kigali is an amendment, not a separate protocol.
Kyoto cuts carbon, Cartagena checks GM crops, Nagoya shares nature’s profits, Montreal mends the ozone, Kigali cuts HFCs
Hindi: क्योटो कार्बन घटाए, कार्टाजेना GM फसल जाँचे, नागोया फायदा बाँटे, मॉन्ट्रियल ओजोन बचाए, किगाली HFC घटाए

Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (2022): the four goals for 2050
The four lettered goals run to 2050; the separate numbered targets run to 2030. Mains 2026 asked for the aim and goals by name, so learn them as A to D.
Protect, Prosper, Share, Invest
Hindi: बचाओ, बढ़ाओ, बाँटो, लगाओ
P Goal A: protect and restore ecosystems, species and genetic diversity
P Goal B: prosper with nature through sustainable use
S Goal C: share benefits fairly from genetic resources and digital sequence information
I Goal D: invest and collaborate, with finance, capacity and technology
Chemicals and waste treaties: Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm
B, R, S runs in both alphabet and date order, and one joint secretariat serves all three. Basel doesn’t ban waste crossing borders; it restricts it and regulates the permitted cases.
Basel checks waste at the border, Rotterdam requests consent before chemical trade, Stockholm stops persistent poisons
Hindi: बासेल कचरे की आवाजाही पर लगाम लगाए, रॉटरडैम पहले रजामंदी ले, स्टॉकहोम टिकाऊ जहर रोके
Basel Basel Convention (1989): restricts and regulates transboundary movement of hazardous wastes
Rotterdam Rotterdam Convention (1998): prior informed consent for hazardous chemicals and pesticides in trade
Stockholm Stockholm Convention (2001): persistent organic pollutants (POPs)
Kyoto Protocol: the six greenhouse gases of Annex A
The Doha Amendment added nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) for the second commitment period, making seven. Water vapor and ozone trap heat but aren’t on the list.

C Carbon dioxide (CO2)
M Methane (CH4)
N Nitrous oxide (N2O)
H Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
P Perfluorocarbons (PFCs)
S Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)
Kyoto Protocol: the three market mechanisms
Only the CDM brought in developing countries like India, which is why Mains 2014 asked about carbon credits from it. The order follows the article numbers 6, 12, 17.
Just Clean Energy
Hindi: संजू स्वच्छ उजाला
J Joint Implementation (Article 6): Annex I countries trade emission reduction units among themselves
C Clean Development Mechanism (Article 12): projects in non-Annex I countries such as India earn credits
E Emissions Trading (Article 17): Annex B parties trade parts of their assigned amounts
UN climate COPs: seven to know, 1995 to 2025
The Kyoto Protocol (1997) and Paris Agreement (2015) are the two treaty milestones. The 2025 paper built a question on COP28’s health declaration, and Mains 2021 on COP26 Glasgow.
Big Promises Get Signed, Deals Become Binding
Hindi: बड़े पक्के गठजोड़ शर्तों से दुनिया बाँधे बेहतर
B Berlin, COP1 (1995): the first COP

Ecology and biodiversity

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Food chain: the trophic levels in order
Only about 10 percent of energy passes up each level (NCERT’s 10 per cent law), which is why food chains stay short. Diatoms are among the sea’s producers (the 2021 paper also counted cyanobacteria), so the 2014 answer ran diatoms, crustaceans, herrings.
Plants Help Carnivores Thrive

P Producers: green plants (first trophic level)
H Herbivores: primary consumers (second level)
C Carnivores: secondary consumers (third level)

N Pyramid of number: upright in a grassland, but inverted for a single tree with many insects
B Pyramid of biomass: inverted in the sea, as fish biomass exceeds the phytoplankton standing crop
E Pyramid of energy: always upright, never inverted
India’s 4 biodiversity hotspots
Sources disagree on the world total: a 2025 PIB note says 4 of 34, while CEPF counts 36. India’s share is 4 either way. The hotspot idea didn’t come from BirdLife International, the 2015 trap.

Vitamins and nutrition

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
Vitamins and their deficiency diseases
UPSC 2014 paired Vitamin E with night blindness; night blindness is Vitamin A. Vitamin E’s deficiency shows up as fragile RBCs.
Without: A, dark nights; B1, beriberi; B2, cracked lips; B6, fits; B12, pale blood; C, bleeding gums; D, bent bones; E, fragile RBCs; K, slow clotting.
A Vitamin A: night blindness and xerophthalmia (hardening of the cornea)
B1 Vitamin B1 (thiamine): beriberi
B2 Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): cheilosis, cracks at the corners of the mouth and lips
B6 Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine): convulsions

D Vitamin D: rickets in children, osteomalacia in adults
E Vitamin E: fragile RBCs and muscular weakness
K Vitamin K: blood takes longer to clot
Fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E and K
These four are stored in the liver and fat tissue. The B group and C dissolve in water and leave in urine, so the diet has to keep supplying them; B12 is the one water-soluble vitamin the body stores.
Add Desi ghee, Eat Kheer.
Hindi: घी में घुलें A, D, E, K; B और C पानी में बह जाएँ।
A Vitamin A: fish liver oil, carrots, butter, milk
D Vitamin D: sunlight, fish, egg yolk
E Vitamin E: vegetable oils such as wheat germ and sunflower oil
K Vitamin K: green leafy vegetables
Chemical names of vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C
The usual slip is swapping thiamine (B1) and riboflavin (B2). The meal runs in the same order as the vitamin numbers.
Tea, Rice, Paratha, Achaar.
Hindi: थाली में राजमा, पापड़, एक अचार।
T Vitamin B1: thiamine
R Vitamin B2: riboflavin
P Vitamin B6: pyridoxine

Blood, immunity and disease

What to rememberMnemonicWhat it decodes to
ABO blood groups: antigens, antibodies and donors
The antigen sits on the red cell and the antibody floats in the plasma, always against the group you don’t have. Match Rh as well: nearly 80 per cent of people are Rh positive.
A holds A and fights B; B holds B and fights A; AB holds both and fights none; O holds none and fights both.
Hindi: A में A, लड़े B से; B में B, लड़े A से; AB में दोनों, लड़े किसी से नहीं; O में कोई नहीं, लड़े दोनों से।
A Group A: antigen A on RBCs, anti-B in plasma; takes blood from A and O
B Group B: antigen B, anti-A; takes blood from B and O
AB Group AB: antigens A and B, no antibodies; takes from AB, A, B and O (universal recipient)
O Group O: no antigen, anti-A and anti-B; takes only O but gives to all (universal donor)
White blood cells, most to least abundant
B cells make antibodies; T cells don’t secrete antibodies but help B cells and run cell-mediated immunity. Both guard the body against pathogens, which was the 2022 answer.
Never Let Monkeys Eat Bananas.
Hindi: नानी लाई मोटी इमली बेचने।
N Neutrophils: 60-65 per cent of WBCs, phagocytic

E Eosinophils: 2-3 per cent, fight infections and allergies
B Basophils: 0.5-1 per cent, the least; release histamine and heparin
Common diseases by microbe: bacteria, viruses, protozoa
Airborne doesn’t mean bacterial: TB is a bacterium, but measles and chickenpox are viruses. Malaria is the odd one out, a protozoan (Plasmodium).
Bacteria: TB Can Travel. Viruses: Many Children Play Hopscotch. Protozoa: Mosquitoes.
Hindi: बैक्टीरिया: टीना है टाइम पर। वायरस: खुश चिड़िया पोखर में हेलो बोले। प्रोटोजोआ: मच्छर।

P Polio: virus, through air and water
H Hepatitis A: virus, through water
M Malaria: protozoan, through mosquitoes
Mosquito vectors and the diseases they carry
Zika rides the same Aedes mosquito as dengue, which made the 2017 statement true. WHO lists lymphatic filariasis under all three mosquitoes, so don’t pin it on one.
Aedes Dances Cheerfully, Zipping Yards; Anopheles Munches; Culex Jumps West.
Hindi: एडीज के डेरे में चिड़िया जीरा पीसे; एनोफिलीज मलाई खाए; क्यूलेक्स जापान से वेस्ट जाए।

C Chikungunya: Aedes
Z Zika: Aedes
Y Yellow fever: Aedes
M Malaria: Anopheles
J Japanese encephalitis: Culex
W West Nile fever: Culex
Universal Immunization Programme: the 12 diseases
Rotavirus and pneumococcal vaccines are now given nationwide (PIB); only Japanese encephalitis, the trick’s last word, stays limited to endemic districts. NHM’s UIP page still lists all three as sub-national, so the sources disagree; 12 diseases as checked on 2026-09-15. (List as of 2026-09-15.)

U Ultraviolet: 400 nm to 1 nm
X X-rays: 1 nm to 10^-3 nm
G Gamma rays: shorter than 10^-3 nm
The four fundamental forces, strongest to weakest
Range and strength are different things: gravity reaches infinitely far yet is the weakest. That’s why ‘gravity is the strongest’ was the wrong statement in 2013.
Strong Elephants Wrestle Gently.
Hindi: प्रिया विदेश से दुल्हन गुड़िया लाई।
S Strong nuclear force: the strongest; carried by gluons
E Electromagnetic force: infinite range, many times stronger than gravity; carried by photons

India’s three-stage nuclear power programme
Stage 2 has begun: the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam reached first criticality on April 6, 2026. Its first core uses a uranium-238 blanket, with thorium blankets planned.
You Push Through: Uranium, then Plutonium, then Thorium.
Hindi: यू-प्लू-थो
U Stage 1: PHWRs burn natural uranium; plutonium builds up in the spent fuel
Pu Stage 2: fast breeder reactors burn uranium-plutonium MOX; a thorium-232 blanket turns into uranium-233
Th Stage 3: thorium-based reactors run on uranium-233
Inside an Indian PHWR: fuel, moderator, coolant and shutdown systems
A moderator slows neutrons and a coolant carries heat away; in a PHWR heavy water does both jobs, and the fuel is natural, unenriched uranium. The rod figures are from NPCIL’s 700 MWe design.
PHWR recipe: U, D2O, D2O, Cd, Gd.
Hindi: PHWR का नुस्खा: ईंधन U, फिर दो बार भारी पानी D2O, D2O, रॉड में Cd, घोल में Gd।
U Fuel: natural uranium oxide (U)
D2O Moderator and reflector: heavy water (D2O)
D2O Coolant: heavy water again (D2O)
Cd Shutdown system 1: 28 mechanical rods of cadmium sandwiched in stainless steel (Cd)
Gd Shutdown system 2: gadolinium nitrate liquid poison injected into the moderator (Gd)

Art, Culture and International Relations Mnemonics

Art and culture reward exact pairings: which dance, painting or cave belongs where, and which item UNESCO or the government added in which year. About 60 prelims questions from 2013 to 2026 touch art, culture and faith, and another 29 test groupings such as BRICS, ASEAN, SAARC, BIMSTEC, SCO and G20, usually as a ‘which of these are members’ list or a match-the-pair table.

Rock-cut caves and the faith each was cut for
The 2013 prelims credited Barabar to Chandragupta Maurya; NCERT names Ashoka as the donor to the Ajivikas, so that statement fails. The 2023 prelims matched Bhaja with Buddhism and Sittanavasal with Jainism.
Ashoka gives Barabar to the Ajivikas, Buddhist monks chant in Karla, Jain monks rest at Udayagiri and paint the ceilings of Sittanavasal, Shiva rules Elephanta, and Ellora makes room for all three faiths.

Elephanta Elephanta, near Mumbai: dominated by the Shaivite faith
Ellora Ellora, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) district: 34 Buddhist, Brahmanical and Jain caves
Temple architecture: the three styles and where each belongs
NCERT treats Vesara as a mixed style that some scholars don’t count separately. Karnataka’s early Chalukya sites use both orders, which is why the 2026 prelims mixed three Karnataka temples with Deogarh (Uttar Pradesh) and asked which carry a Nagara shikhara.
Nagara nods north, Dravida dives down south, Vesara ventures in between.
Hindi: नागर ऊपर उत्तर में, द्रविड़ नीचे दक्षिण में, वेसर बीच में दोनों का मेल
Nagara Nagara: north India; the tower over the sanctum is a shikhara
Dravida Dravida: south India; the tower is a vimana, with gopuram gateways
Vesara Vesara: the Deccan, mainly Karnataka; a hybrid of the two, as in Hoysala temples
Rajasthani schools of painting
The 2018 prelims asked which school the painting Bani Thani belongs to: Kishangarh, the school NCERT ties to Nihal Chand’s elongated figures and Radha-Krishna themes. Kangra, one of the options, is Pahari, not Rajasthani.

A 30-Day Routine to Make the Tricks Stick

Reading a mnemonic once doesn’t store it. Testing yourself on it, at widening gaps, does. Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke’s 2006 work on the testing effect showed that recalling material beats rereading it for long-term retention, and spacing those recalls out is what the 1-3-7-21 rule in our UPSC revision strategy is built on.

Here’s the rule applied to the eight subjects. Count the day you learn a subject’s tricks as Day 1, then self-test that night, on Day 3, on Day 7 and on Day 21.

SubjectLearn onSelf-test on

Culture and International RelationsDay 8Days 8, 10, 14, 28
All eight, mixedDays 29 and 30One full pass across every PDF

The first eight days are the heavy ones: one new subject a day, plus one to three short tests. Days 15 to 20 have no scheduled tests, so spend them on your weak list, and the Day 21 checks run from day 21 to day 28.

Each subject PDF has a cover-the-answer column. Use it the same way every time:

  • Fold the page or lay a card over the decode column so only the mnemonic shows.
  • Say or write the full list from the mnemonic alone, in order.
  • Uncover and mark each trick: a tick if you got every item, a cross if you missed or swapped one.
  • Any trick with two crosses goes on a short weak list that you test daily until it’s clean.

Two habits make the routine work. Test in the language you’ll write the exam in, and if you use both, test once in each. And if a trick won’t stick after three tries, the trick is the problem, not you. Rewrite it with the five methods above until it’s yours.

Once the tricks hold, check where they pay off. The Polity Prelims PYQ collection and the PYQ weightage explorer show which lists UPSC actually returns to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best mnemonics for UPSC?

The best mnemonics for UPSC are the ones built on lists the exam actually tests and checked against a primary source. That means the Fundamental Rights groups, the emergency articles, the writs, the Tropic of Cancer states, dynasties in order and changing memberships dated to when they were checked. A clever trick for a list UPSC never asks is wasted effort, and a trick built on an old list is worse than none.

Where can I find GK tricks in Hindi for UPSC?

This guide gives a native Hindi trick next to every English one, across all eight GS subjects, and each subject PDF prints both. The Hindi tricks aren’t translations of the English ones. They’re written to sound natural in spoken Hindi, and they decode the same list in the same order, so you can switch languages without relearning anything.

What is the easiest way to remember Fundamental Rights?

Learn the six groups in order: Equality (Articles 14-18), Freedom (19-22), against Exploitation (23-24), Religion (25-28), Cultural and Educational (29-30) and Constitutional Remedies (32). Then chunk the citizens-only articles as 15-16, 19 and 29-30. The Polity section of this guide has the full fundamental rights mnemonics in English and Hindi. Ignore any trick that lists seven rights, because the right to property left Part III in 1978.

Do mnemonics help in UPSC Mains?

Only a little, and only for recall. A mnemonic can bring back the grounds for a National Emergency or the sequence of Gandhian movements while you write, which saves time and keeps facts accurate. It can’t build the argument, the examples or the analysis that Mains marks. Use tricks to hold facts and use your notes and answer writing practice for everything else.

How many mnemonics should I learn for UPSC?

Fewer than you think. Each subject in this guide has roughly 18 to 28 tricks, chosen because the list is tested and easy to confuse. If you already know a list cold, skip its trick. Too many similar acronyms start interfering with each other, so a smaller set you can recall perfectly beats a large set you half remember.

Should I make my own mnemonics or use ready-made ones?

Both work. A trick you build yourself is often easier to remember because you made the connections, and the five methods in this guide show how. Ready-made tricks save time and, when they have been checked against sources, protect you from errors. The best approach is to start with the checked ones and rewrite any trick that doesn’t stick after three tries.

Are old GK tricks still correct?

Many aren’t. Tricks built on nine planets, seven Fundamental Rights or 29 states encode lists that have since changed. Memberships of groups such as BRICS and G20 have also grown. Before you learn a trick, check that the list behind it is current, and prefer sources that show the date the list was checked.

How do I stop mixing up similar mnemonics?

Give each trick a distinct scene or sound, and test them side by side rather than in separate sittings. Most mix-ups happen between tricks for related lists, such as two sets of articles from the same Part of the Constitution. Testing them together with the cover-the-answer column shows you exactly where they collide, and then you can rewrite one of them.
